LED tape light is the flexible, adhesive-backed linear format used for cabinets, joinery, retail shelving, office coves, hotel details and signage structures — anywhere the light has to be seen but the fitting does not. It is a name for a format, not a separate technology, and that is the first thing worth clearing up.

The specification questions are the same as for any low-voltage strip: voltage, LED density, board width, CRI, IP rating, power supply capacity, dimming method and how it is physically fixed. What changes with tape light is the scale — most of these positions are narrow, shallow, close to the eye and awkward to reach afterwards, so board width and serviceability matter more than they would on a ceiling run. What LED Tape Light Actually Is

LED tape light is a flexible circuit board carrying LEDs at a fixed pitch, supplied on reels and cut to length at marked cutting points. The board is narrow — 8 mm and 10 mm in our SMD range — with adhesive on the back so it can be laid into a groove, a profile or the underside of a shelf without brackets.

That compactness is the whole reason it gets specified: a cabinet underside, a shelf reveal or a 12 mm ceiling slot has no room for a luminaire. The trade-off is that a thin board in a tight space has nowhere to dump heat, which is why aluminium profile stops being cosmetic and becomes part of the product.

Two things tape light is not. It is not a finished fitting — it needs a supply, and usually a profile and diffuser, to become an installation. And it is not a visible-line product: the emitters are individually visible up close, so where the lit line itself is on show rather than the surface it washes, a diffused product does the job better.

LED Tape Light vs LED Strip Light: Is There a Difference?

Not in any way that affects procurement. Both describe the same category; the terms split by market and habit rather than by construction. “Tape light” tends to be used where the adhesive backing and narrow board are the point — furniture, joinery, retail fixtures — and “strip light” is the broader industry term covering the same products plus larger architectural runs.

Where terminology matters is in what it hides. Two suppliers can both quote “LED tape light” and ship products differing in board width, density, CRI, current draw and cutting interval — all of which decide whether the reel fits the profile and the driver copes. Compare the specification sheet, not the name. The broader category guide is at led strip lights, and the package-level detail is in SMD LED strip.

The one genuine product distinction is dotted versus dotless. SMD tape has discrete emitters at a visible pitch; COB LED Strip presents a continuous emitting line. For a concealed cove seen only by its wash, the difference is invisible and SMD is the sensible choice. For a shallow shelf reveal or an under-cabinet line seen directly, it is the whole difference.

Stating this early because it answers several questions at once. Every SMD tape light we manufacture is IP20 and CRI 80. There is no waterproof SMD tape and no high-CRI SMD tape in the range.

Two consequences, both common project decisions. Any position that water actually reaches — an exterior soffit, a wet-room niche, a washdown counter — is not an SMD tape position: it is either a sealed neon product, or an IP20 tape inside a sealed profile assembly somebody warrants as a complete system. And where colour rendering genuinely matters — merchandise under a display shelf, food, artwork, skin tones at a vanity mirror — CRI 80 is the wrong starting point, and every CRI 90 product in our range is COB.

Worth checking with any supplier. Where a quotation answers “waterproof version available” or “we can do CRI 90” without naming a model number, ask for the SKU and what the warranty covers before it reaches a purchase order.

Key Specifications to Check

Tape light is chosen by specification, not by how a sample looks on a desk. These parameters decide whether it works in the position it was bought for.

  1. Board width. The first thing to fix and the most common cause of returns. Our SMD tape is 8 mm or 10 mm; a groove cut for one will not accept the other. Confirm it before the millwork is machined.
  2. Voltage. 12V or 24V, decided by run length rather than preference. Both are available across the 2835 tape range.
  3. LED density. 60, 120 or 240 LEDs per metre — this drives both output and how visible the dots are, so it is really a viewing-distance decision.
  4. Power per metre and total load. Multiply by actual metres, then add real headroom. A supply matched exactly to calculated load has no margin for a warm cabinet void.
  5. Cutting interval. Higher density means more LEDs per cuttable segment and so a coarser minimum length. Where a run must finish flush with a shelf end, check the interval against the dimension.
  6. Colour temperature and batch consistency. Running the same tape across dozens of cabinets makes reel-to-reel consistency matter more than the nominal figure. Ask what is controlled between batches, in writing.
  7. Dimming method. Confirm the control system before the driver is ordered, since the driver has to suit both tape and dimmer.

The SMD 2835 family is the working tape light range: single colour, IP20, CRI 80, available in both 12V and 24V, and the standard specification for cabinet, joinery, cove and shelf work.

  1. SMD 2835 LED strip at 60 LEDs per metre, 8 mm board — the general-purpose choice for concealed coves, general joinery lighting and distributor stock, where the wash matters and the tape is never seen directly.
  2. SMD 2835 LED strip at 120 LEDs per metre, also 8 mm — double the density on the same width, for under-cabinet, shelf and display positions needing higher output and a tighter dot pitch. The most commonly specified tape light in the range.
  3. SMD 2835 LED Strip 240LEDs/m on a 10 mm board — the high-output option, for shallow profiles and positions where a single tape has to do the work of two.

Note the width step: the 240 LEDs/m option is 10 mm, not 8 mm. Where a project starts at 60 or 120 LEDs per metre and later upgrades for output, the profile has to accept the wider board — easy to miss once joinery drawings are issued.

12V vs 24V LED Tape Light

All three 2835 tape options come in 12V and 24V, so this is a layout decision rather than a product one — and it is decided by individual run length, not total project metres.

12V suits short runs: a single cabinet, a display box, a shelf, a mirror surround. Over short distances voltage drop is not worth engineering around, and 12V drivers are compact enough to hide in joinery. 24V holds output better over distance and is the sensible default for office coves, hotel corridors and long shelving lines, because it needs fewer feed points for the same visual result.

One constraint worth raising at enquiry stage: our standard listed power adapters are 12V units. A 24V run needs its supply confirmed against actual load rather than assumed, and that is far cheaper to settle in the quotation than on site.

Either way, do not plan a long run as one continuous tape fed from one end. Past the rated run length the far end is visibly dimmer and no driver setting fixes it — feed from both ends, or split into zones.

Cutting, Connections and Cable Runs

Cuttability is why tape light suits joinery, and also where site work most often goes wrong. Tape cuts only at the marked points between LED groups; cutting mid-group kills that segment. The interval depends on density, so a 240 LEDs/m tape has a coarser minimum length than a 60 LEDs/m one. Three decisions follow, all cheaper made before production than on site.

  1. Cut lengths. Where runs are known — cabinet widths, shelf lengths, a repeated module — supply them with the enquiry. Factory-cut and prewired tape arrives ready to fit, with soldered joints instead of site-crimped ones.
  2. Joints and connectors. Clip connectors are quick and are the usual first failure point on a joinery job, because a cabinet door slams a few thousand times a year. Soldered joints last; where clips are used, put them somewhere reachable.
  3. Cable exits. Decide which end of each run the cable leaves from, and where it goes. Retrofitting a route through a finished carcass means taking the carcass apart.

Dimming and Control Options

Single-colour tape light dims well, provided tape, driver and dimmer are chosen as one system. Confirm the control method before the driver is ordered — the driver has to satisfy both sides.

Our single-colour dimmers cover the common project cases: an inline single colour dimmer for discreet in-cable control on one cabinet or display; a touch single colour dimmer where a surface control point is wanted; 11-key and 14-key RF remote dimmers for concealed tape; and a 30A dimmer where the load exceeds the smaller units. All are 12V/24V.

RF matters more than it sounds here. A cabinet, cove or shelf reveal is exactly where an infrared receiver ends up hidden behind timber and stops working; RF does not care about line of sight.

Where the requirement is a building control system — DALI, 0–10V or a hotel room controller — say so at enquiry stage, because that changes the driver rather than the tape. And where colour changing is wanted rather than dimming, that is a different family: see rgb led strip.

Where LED Tape Light Is Used

Tape light earns its place where the fitting has to disappear into the construction. Five groups account for most commercial demand.

Cabinet and joinery lighting

Under cabinets, inside shelves, in wardrobes and within custom furniture. Board width against the machined groove is the binding constraint, followed by cable exit position and how the tape will be reached in five years. Where the tape is seen from a standing or seated position — an open shelf, a glazed cabinet — COB is the better format, as in our cabinet COB LED strip installation.

Retail shelf and display lighting

Shelving, counters, display cases and feature backing. This is where the CRI 80 constraint bites: lighting that has to make merchandise look right is a CRI 90 requirement, and that means COB, as in our high-CRI retail shelf project. Where the tape is lighting a graphic panel or a general fixture wash, CRI 80 is fine.

Office and commercial cove lighting

Ceiling coves, reception features, meeting rooms and circulation. Concealed indirect positions are ideal SMD tape territory — nobody sees the source, only the wash — and 24V with dimming is the usual specification. Our dimmable 24V office cove project is a direct reference.

Hotel and hospitality detail

Guest room coves, headboard details, wardrobe and vanity lighting, corridor recesses. Warm colour temperature and consistency between reels are the priorities, because a corridor where every third bay is a slightly different white is a snagging item across the whole floor. Visible lines and exterior positions

Where the lit line itself is the design feature, or where the position is outdoors, bare tape is the wrong product. A sealed diffused body gives a continuous even line and survives weather: see outdoor LED neon flex. Completed installations across every category are in the case study hub.

Installation Planning

Tape light installs quickly, which is exactly why it gets planned badly. Four points cover most of the avoidable problems.

  1. Use aluminium profile. Three jobs, not one: it pulls heat out of the board, protects the tape from knocks and cleaning, and carries a diffuser that hides the dots. In an enclosed cabinet the thermal function is the important one — tape run bare in a sealed void gets hot, and heat shortens LED life.
  2. Do not rely on the adhesive alone. The backing is an installation aid. In warm positions or on textured surfaces it eventually lets go, and the tape peels off a cabinet underside where nobody notices until it hangs. Profile, clips or mechanical fixing is the commercial answer.
  3. Keep drivers ventilated and reachable. Drivers fail before tape does. One sealed inside a plinth turns a ten-minute swap into joinery work, and one in a warm unventilated box fails sooner in the first place.
  4. Prepare the surface. Clean, dry, dust-free and not freshly painted. Adhesive on MDF dust or uncured paint is a callback.

Low-voltage tape is not high-risk work, but the mains side of any driver belongs to a qualified electrician under local regulations.

LED Tape Light Buyer Checklist

Send these with the enquiry and the reply will name a tape, a driver and a control method rather than quoting a generic reel.

  1. Application — cabinet, shelf, retail display, office cove, hotel room or signage, and whether the tape will be visible or concealed.
  2. Environment — dry interior, damp area or exterior, by actual exposure rather than room name.
  3. Board width available — the groove or profile dimension, since that constrains everything else.
  4. Voltage and run lengths — total metres and, separately, each individual run.
  5. Colour temperature and brightness — or a reference sample, usually faster than a number.
  6. Cut lengths — where runs are known, so tape can be cut and prewired in the factory.
  7. Control — on/off, dimming and which dimmer or building system, plus who operates it.
  8. Order requirement — samples first, then bulk reel, cut length, packaging or distributor supply.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Ordering the tape before the profile is fixed. An 8 mm groove takes none of the 10 mm options. Settle board width first.
  2. Buying by watts per metre. Wattage says nothing about output, dot visibility or life. Density, CRI and thermal design decide how it looks and how long it lasts.
  3. Assuming a waterproof or CRI 90 version exists. Our SMD tape is IP20 and CRI 80 throughout; those requirements point to a sealed neon product or to COB.
  4. Trusting the adhesive as the only fixing. Fine for a sample board, not for a commercial fit-out.
  5. Running one long tape from one feed. The far end dims visibly and no driver setting corrects it.
  6. Confirming dimming after ordering the driver. The driver has to match both dimmer and tape, so it is the last thing to specify.
  7. Mixing reels without checking batch consistency. On a repeated joinery or corridor detail, reel-to-reel colour variation shows as a pattern across the whole job.

LED Tape Light FAQ

Is LED tape light the same as LED strip light?

For procurement purposes, yes. Both describe a flexible LED circuit board supplied on reels; “tape light” emphasises the narrow adhesive-backed format used in furniture and joinery. Compare board width, density, voltage, CRI and IP rating rather than the name.

Can LED tape light be cut?

Only at the marked cutting points between LED groups. The minimum segment depends on density, so a 240 LEDs/m tape has a coarser interval than a 60 LEDs/m one. Where exact lengths are known, factory-cut and prewired tape avoids site soldering.

Do LED tape lights need aluminium profiles?

Not in every position, but in commercial work usually yes. The profile removes heat, protects the tape and carries a diffuser that hides the dots — in enclosed cabinets and shallow reveals it is doing real thermal and visual work.

Can LED tape light be used outdoors?

Not ours. Every SMD tape we make is IP20, indoor dry locations only. An exterior or washdown position needs a sealed neon product, or an IP20 tape inside a sealed profile assembly warranted as a complete system. Sealant applied on site is not a substitute.

Should I choose 12V or 24V LED tape light?

Decide by individual run length. 12V suits short cabinet, shelf and display runs; 24V is better for coves, corridors and long lines because it needs fewer feed points. Our standard listed power adapters are 12V, so a 24V supply needs confirming against actual load.

Is dimmable LED tape light available?
