Sixty-Two Keys, Eleven Footprints, One Colour

A 62-key refurbishment in a converted convent in Verona: the same three layers of hotel guest room cove lighting in every room — a warm-white perimeter cove, a wash behind the upholstered headboard, a wardrobe interior line — handed over floor by floor across six months.

Eleven room footprints meant eleven cove lengths, Approx. 18 m to Approx. 32 m. What had to be identical was harder: 2700K everywhere, and no guest able to tell room 41 from room 7. The brief’s plan for holding that is the part that does not work.

Why Six Phases and One Bin Can’t Both Be Promised

Six production phases across six months, every reel carrying one bin code: two promises that cancel. A bin is a property of a production run. Reels made in February and in July come off different die and phosphor lots, and no inspection at dispatch changes what was made.

So the fix is not a verification step, it is the order. Produce all 62 keys in one run against one PO, then release it in six deliveries. What phases is the shipment, not the manufacture. Cash flow was the reason for splitting it, and cash flow belongs in the payment terms — deferring manufacture is the version that buys colour drift. Warehousing is cheap next to 62 rooms that don’t match.

Two honest limits: we run no spectrometer bin-verification service, and hold no reference reel for months. A transit loss is covered from the retained balance of that run — which is why the order carries an overage on day one, not a promise to match later. Ask for the production date on every reel label; reject any reel not carrying the same one.

What a Ceiling Does Not Do to a Spectrum

The brief put CRI 90 on the two surfaces a guest inspects and CRI 80 on the cove — the right call for the wrong reason. The reason given was that a white ceiling is a broadband diffuser that eats the difference. A ceiling scatters light; it cannot add spectral content that was never emitted, because reflection multiplies the source spectrum by the paint’s reflectance curve and multiplication only subtracts. What makes the split safe is the task: nothing is judged under the cove, while skin and fabric get the CRI 90 runs.

What the split risks is chromaticity, not Ra. From the pillow, ceiling plane and headboard glow sit in one view, off two platforms built on two lines. Nominal 2700K is not a coordinate: two reels sold at the same number can sit at different points near the blackbody locus and read as a warm-to-cool step across that sweep. The brief cited CIE 13.3, which defines the CRI calculation and says nothing about how far apart two reels sit. Nor is “927” a bin code — it is lamp shorthand for Ra grade plus CCT, impossible on a CRI 80 reel.

The bedhead run also drew a Risk Group 0 citation for sitting Approx. 300 mm from a guest’s face. The guest sees a reflection off upholstery, never the emitter, and a white source’s risk group is set by its blue content — a dimmed 2700K wash is the mildest case IEC 62471 classifies. The real question there is thermal: a dense emitter in a closed cavity against textile wants aluminium backing and an air gap.

A 32 m cove is not one piece. Reels cap at 20 m, so larger footprints take two sections, and continuity is a joint landed on a corner return no sightline crosses. Feed both ends: percentage drop scales with the square of run length, which is why this is a 24V bus. Our supply line is DC12V adapters topping out at 96 W, so drivers are bought locally. Every run sits in the SELV band of IEC 61140; the drivers are IP20 devices under IEC 60529 in a ceiling void. Sizing them to 80% of rated load is a thermal habit with no standard behind it.

The 2700K was an aesthetic decision off the brand’s reference photography, worth recording as such — the warm white COB LED strip range covers 3000K and 4000K on the same platform.

If You’re Refurbishing a Multi-Key Property

  • Phase the delivery, never the production. Colour match is bought at manufacture; nothing downstream restores it.
  • Buy the overage with the order. A reel held back from the original run is the only bin-matched spare that exists.
  • Split CRI by what is inspected. Then police chromaticity between the two references — that is what a guest sees from the pillow.
