Choosing an LED strip supplier decides more than your unit cost. It decides whether the second order matches the first, whether the drivers that arrive suit the strip, whether reels reach site in the week the programme needs them, and how much of your team’s time goes on after-sales problems that should never have existed. None of that appears on a quotation, which is why the cheapest quotation is so often the most expensive purchase.
This guide is for people who buy in volume — distributors, importers, contractors and project procurement teams — and it is written from the manufacturing side, so it includes the things suppliers prefer buyers did not ask about: how to tell a real manufacturer from a reseller, what to test before committing, and which questions expose actual capability rather than sales copy. What Separates a Good LED Strip Supplier From a Cheap One
Almost any supplier can send a photo and a price. The differences that matter show up months later, and they cluster around four things.
Repeatability. Can they deliver the same product in six months? Not a similar model — the same one, at the same colour temperature, looking identical beside the first batch on one wall. For a distributor that decides whether you can build a catalogue; for a project buyer, whether phase two matches phase one. A vague answer here is itself the answer.
Willingness to say no. A supplier who agrees to everything is telling you they will substitute silently rather than raise a problem. The useful one says “that position needs a sealed product” or “we do not make that”. You want the disagreement at enquiry stage, not on site.
Technical matching rather than order-taking. A supplier who quotes exactly what you asked without a single question has not read the brief; one who asks about run lengths, feed positions, profile and control system is doing the job you are paying for.
Accessory coherence. Strip, power supply, controller, connectors and profile have to work as a set, and the interfaces are where installations fail. A supplier covering all of them owns those interfaces; one selling only strip leaves them to you. None of the four is a certificate or a factory photo — those are easy to produce, repeat performance is not.
LED Strip Manufacturer, Trading Company or Distributor
All three will sell you LED strip. They differ in how much control sits with the party you are talking to, which matters as soon as something has to change.
A manufacturer controls the specification, the schedule and the batch. Custom lengths, prewired connectors, custom colour temperature and OEM packaging become real options rather than requests passed down a chain, and a colour-consistency commitment is something they can actually make. Your job is verifying the factory is genuinely theirs — many “manufacturers” are not, and the test is technical rather than diplomatic.
A trading company can assemble a wider range across categories quickly, which has value when you need several product types in one shipment. The trade-off is that production detail and batch continuity sit one step away from your contact — workable for standard product, awkward for anything custom or repeated. A local distributor gives you stock now in small quantities, right for maintenance and urgent replacements, with customisation limited by definition.
So: custom length, OEM packing, project-specific voltage or batch consistency across phases means a manufacturer. Twenty metres tomorrow means buying locally. Most businesses need both, and the mistake is using one where the other belongs.

A supplier’s range tells you which of your enquiries they can answer without subcontracting. Five directions cover most commercial and project demand.
Single-colour SMD strip is the volume product — coves, cabinets, retail shelving, offices, profile work. Ask which LED package, densities, board widths and voltages, since those decide whether it fits your customers’ profiles; detail in our SMD LED strip guide. COB strip covers what the eye sees at close range: dot-free lines in reveals, display cases and millwork. Colour-change strip — RGB, RGBW, RGBCW — serves retail, hospitality and signage, where the real question is the controller rather than the strip: which one drives it, and do they supply it.
Sealed products for wet and exterior positions are the industry’s most common misrepresentation, so ask which SKUs are genuinely sealed and at what rating. In our range every COB and SMD strip is IP20, and the sealed products are the silicone and PVC neon families at IP65 and IP67 — an outdoor position is either a neon product or an indoor strip inside a sealed profile assembly somebody warrants as a system. Where a supplier offers only “waterproof version available”, ask for the SKU, the rating and what is warranted.

Which Samples to Request First
Test a supplier on standard product first. It is where consistency problems are easiest to see and hardest to hide, and it is what you will buy most of anyway. For a first evaluation, three items from one family, so the only variable is density:
- SMD 2835 LED strip at 60 LEDs per metre on an 8 mm board, IP20 — the baseline distributor and general indoor product.
- SMD 2835 LED strip at 120 LEDs per metre, same 8 mm board — the workhorse for cabinet, display, office and profile work.
- SMD 2835 LED Strip 240LEDs/m on a 10 mm board — higher density for shallow coves where the diffuser sits close to the board.
That lets you judge board quality, soldering, colour consistency and packaging with density as the only difference. Add COB, colour-change or sealed neon once the basics hold; fifteen samples at once produces a pile of reels and no conclusions. And a generic kit shows a supplier’s best product, not what your order will contain — for anything beyond a trial, ask for the exact SKU, cut from current production.
How to Evaluate LED Strip Quality on Arrival
Brightness impresses in a dark room and tells you almost nothing. These checks are repeatable and they catch the problems that cost money.
Compare colour side by side, not in sequence. Power two reels of the same specification simultaneously against a white surface. The eye is poor at absolute colour and excellent at comparison — a difference invisible when viewed one after another is obvious side by side, and side by side is what your customer gets when two runs meet on one wall.
Test in the actual profile, warm. A strip that looks perfect on a bench can dot visibly through a particular diffuser or run hot in a shallow channel. Leave it powered a few hours in the profile, then look again — heat-related problems only appear at working temperature.
Inspect board, solder and cut points. Check the cut lines, the pads and the joints at the emitters, and bend a section gently to look for cracking. Confirm the cut interval matches what you were told and that pads are clean enough to solder reliably — a strip that cannot be neatly rejoined creates site problems.
Read the packaging as evidence. Reel labelling, model identification, batch marking and export packing show how organised production is. Unlabelled reels are a traceability warning: when you need matching stock next year, someone has to know what this was.
Test the accessories together. Put the strip on the power supply, controller and dimmer you intend to sell with it, and dim to the bottom of the range. Flicker, stepping and dropout at low output are common and almost never mentioned in a datasheet.
Questions to Ask Before a Bulk Order
A clear enquiry gets a useful answer. These are ordered by how much they reveal.
“What do you recommend for this application, and why?” Send the application rather than the part number. The reasoning in the reply, or its absence, says whether you have reached an engineer or an order desk.
“How do you handle colour consistency between production runs, and will you put it in the order?” The most important question here. Ask what happens when a customer reorders in eight months and needs a match, and whether single-batch supply per continuous run is possible where lengths allow.
“Which SKUs are sealed, at what rating, and what exactly is warranted?” This is where vague answers do the most damage. Insist on SKU-level answers.
“Which power supply and controller suit this load, and do you supply them?” Calculate the load per run yourself and compare it against what they propose. If the proposed capacity exactly equals the load with nothing spare, ask again.
“What documentation exists for this exact SKU?” Not the family, not a similar model. Ask which datasheets, test reports and market certifications cover the item on the order in your destination market — before you commit, rather than at customs.
“What custom options exist, what volume does each need, and what is the realistic lead time?” Reel lengths, prewired connectors, custom colour temperature and OEM packaging are normal manufacturer capabilities, and the volume each requires tells you whether the setup is genuinely theirs. On dates, an optimistic promise that gets missed costs more than an honest one — how a supplier communicates delays is a good predictor.

If You Are a Distributor or Wholesaler
A contractor needs one job to succeed; you need a line you can sell for years without the specification shifting underneath you. That makes SKU stability the deciding factor. Ask how long the specified items stay available and what notice you get before a change — a quietly revised specification is worse than a price increase, because your catalogue, photography and customers’ expectations are built on the old one.
Beyond that: a compact core SKU list rather than an unmanageable catalogue, consistent model naming and reel labelling so your warehouse can identify stock, specification sheets and images you may use in your own materials, matched power supplies and controllers so you can sell complete solutions, and batch traceability so a reorder can be matched rather than guessed at. Agree early how defective returns are handled and how pricing moves as volume grows.

If You Are a Contractor or Project Buyer
Your risk is concentrated: material arriving late, arriving wrong, or arriving correct but incompatible with something already installed. Most of it is removed by what you send with the enquiry rather than by who you buy from. Include the detail drawing — it answers questions about profile, run length and feed position that a bill of materials cannot. State total length and, separately, the length of each individual run. Say which positions are indoor, damp or genuinely exterior, using the actual exposure rather than the room name. Give the voltage, where drivers can physically sit, and the control system the building runs. Name the profile, diffuser and mounting method if chosen.
Tedious, and it removes the four failure modes behind most site problems: wrong voltage for the run length, a power supply without enough capacity, dimming that does not work with the specified gear, and a strip that does not fit the profile someone already ordered. All four are cheap to prevent at enquiry stage and expensive to fix on site.
Common Mistakes When Choosing an LED Strip Supplier
- Comparing unit price across different specifications. Two strips at the same price per metre can differ in board width, LED density, driver requirement and consistency. Compare like with like or the exercise is meaningless.
- Accepting “waterproof version available” without a SKU. Ask which item, at what rating, and what is warranted. This answer most often turns out to be optimistic.
- Specifying one product for every position. Concealed, visible, wet and exterior positions need different products; one answer for all four means the job was not understood.
- Withholding drawings. Without layout information no supplier can flag voltage drop, feed positions or profile mismatch — and the problem then becomes yours on site.

How do I choose a reliable LED strip supplier?
Test three things in order: whether they will commit to colour consistency between production runs, whether they ask about your application before quoting, and whether they supply the accessories so the interfaces are their responsibility. Price is the fourth question, not the first.
Should I buy from a manufacturer or a wholesaler?
