LED strip lighting has become the default way to put light into architecture rather than onto it — retail displays and shelf edges, supermarket refrigerated cases, hotel coves and headboards, restaurant ceilings, office reveals and residential joinery. Senfey manufactures the SMD and COB strip used in those installations for B2B buyers, contractors and lighting designers. Where LED Strip Lighting Fits in Commercial and Interior Projects

Indoor strip lighting rarely does the whole job. It shapes space and hides its own source, while directional fixtures put light on tasks. Which of three roles the run plays is what decides the specification.

  1. Ambient, indirect and cove. Concealed in coves, gypsum reveals or ceiling perimeters, bouncing light off a surface. Medium-density strip in an aluminium profile with an opal diffuser is the standard answer, and because the emitter is hidden, this is where cost-efficient SMD earns its place.
  2. Accent, display and backlighting. Signage boxes, shelf edges, panels, feature walls. Density matters more than lumen output here, because the failure mode is a visible dot pattern rather than insufficient light. LED strip accent lighting close behind a diffusing panel needs the highest density available.
  3. Recessed and linear detailing. Plaster-in channels, millwork grooves, slim profiles. Recessed LED strip lighting is designed backwards — profile depth and diffuser first, then density, because mounting depth determines whether the line reads as continuous.

The most useful judgement to carry into a drawing review: dot visibility is a product of density, diffuser and mounting depth together, not density alone. A 240 LEDs/m strip pressed 5 mm behind a thin diffuser will still scallop; a 120 LEDs/m strip in a properly deep detail will not. Buying density to fix a shallow detail is the commonest way project money is wasted on strip.

What Buyers Call It: Naming Variants Across Tenders

A practical note, because it causes real confusion in international tendering. The same product arrives under a dozen names: strip lighting, LED lighting strips, lighting strips, strip lighting LED, striplighting and LED flexible lighting strip all describe one family. Regional habits differ — British specifications say linear or cove lighting, North American drawings say tape light, and Middle East and South East Asian tenders often say LED bar lighting strips even when flexible strip is intended.

It matters because a quotation built on the wrong reading of the term is not comparable to the others. If a drawing says LED bar lighting strips, confirm whether it means flexible strip on a reel or a rigid aluminium bar — price, mounting method and labour are entirely different. When specifying an LED strip for lighting a cove, state format, density and profile rather than relying on the name.

Three clarifications that save a specification cycle. Colour rendering: COB is CRI 90, SMD is CRI 80, so colour-critical zones — fabric, food, cosmetics, skin tones — should be COB rather than a high-CRI SMD variant, because there is no CRI 95 product in the range; where the difference is visible is covered in high CRI COB LED strip. PCB width: the narrowest board we make is 8 mm, so small strip lighting details drawn for 4 or 5 mm need a wider groove or another supplier. IP: every Senfey SMD and COB strip is IP20, dry indoor only — our only wet and exterior family is LED neon flex, in silicone IP65 and IP67 and PVC IP67.

Out of scope: auto LED lighting strips — the 12 V automotive aftermarket family — carry different vibration, temperature and approval requirements, and are neither covered here nor supplied by us.

What Senfey Supplies, and What Comes From Other Packages

A strip installation is assembled from several trades’ scopes. Settling this early prevents the variation orders that appear when two packages each assumed the other was supplying the profile.

Stated without hedging: Senfey does not supply aluminium profile, diffusers or an LED light strip cover, DALI, DMX or 0–10 V control gear, sensors, keypads or building management integration, does not publish SDCM binning figures or photometric IES and LDT files, and does not certify strip as approved for a particular control platform. What we do is confirm the strip performs correctly on the platform your controls contractor has chosen, checked as a complete chain — strip, driver, controller, interface — before anything ships. Name the platform at quotation stage and that happens then, rather than at commissioning with the ceilings closed.

Typical Application Scenarios and Layout Notes

Retail stores, kiosks and display cases

Compact 8 mm SMD inside signage boxes and shelf edges; COB where the line is visible to a customer at the fixture. LED strips for display cases sit close to merchandise, which puts two things in tension: colour rendering, because fabric and cosmetics are judged directly, and heat, because a sealed vitrine has nowhere to dump it. Specify COB at CRI 90 for the goods and give the driver a ventilated position outside the case. Store-level specification is in our retail store LED lighting cluster.

Supermarkets and refrigerated display

Chilled cases are the most demanding indoor application here. Strip has to hold output at low ambient temperature, mounting position along the shelf front decides whether product faces are lit or shadowed, and condensation is a real risk at the cable entry rather than along the strip body. Since our strip is IP20, a refrigerated installation depends on the case construction holding it in a dry sealed channel — a detail that belongs in the case specification and should be confirmed before ordering.

Hospitality, guest rooms and food and beverage

Reception soffits, corridor coves, headboards, bar counters, restaurant ceilings. Guest-facing zones are seen close-up and often at low dim levels, so a dot-free line and stable colour temperature matter more than output. The layered approach across a property is in hotel LED lighting solutions. Bathroom mirrors deserve a separate flag: they are frequently drawn with strip, and where the position sees splash or wet cleaning, IP20 strip is the wrong product however the profile is detailed.

Residential and home interiors

House LED strip lighting and LED home strip lighting in developer and fit-out work is mostly joinery and cove: under-cabinet, wardrobe interiors, floating shelves, skirting reveals, bed frames. LED lighting strips for home use should be specified around flicker-free driver behaviour and a clean profile rather than lumen output, because runs are short and seen from a metre away. Note we have no tunable-white or CCT-adjustable strip, so a warm-to-cool brief needs two circuits of fixed colour temperature or another supplier.

Ceiling, cove and recessed detailing

Design the profile and diffuser first, then choose density. LED strips for ceiling coves and a light strip for ceiling reveal both live or die on mounting depth — the diffuser needs distance from the emitters to blend them, and an opal, frosted or micro-prismatic cover trades a little output for a continuous line, a trade almost always worth taking on a visible run. Where a ceiling light strip is long and continuous, 24 V is the correct starting point, not 12 V.

What High Quality LED Strip Lighting Means in a Specification

The phrase gets used loosely in marketing. In a specification it comes down to seven decisions.

On that last point: LED adhesive strip lighting relies on tape that ages with heat and surface preparation. On any permanent run, especially overhead, the strip belongs in a profile or under mechanical clips, with the adhesive doing nothing but holding position while the fixing goes on. The profile also does real thermal work, and junction temperature determines whether a rated life figure means anything — strip run hot in a sealed detail fades and shifts colour long before its stated hours.

Power, Control and Accessories on Site

  1. Drivers and adapters. Size to roughly 80 % of rated load and group by circuit length and control zone, not by convenience. Our power range is DC 12 V adapters from 12 W to 96 W, covering joinery, display and shelf work; larger loads and any 24 V run need a driver from your electrical package. Worth knowing for maintenance planning: drivers usually fail before LEDs do, so driver quality and driver access set the real service interval.
  2. Connectors and voltage drop. Solderless connectors for prototyping and mock-ups; soldered or crimped joints in a profile for permanent work. On long runs feed from both ends or inject mid-run. Field experience is consistent — failures concentrate at cuts, joints and cable entries, not along the strip body — so the fewer joints in inaccessible positions the better.
  3. Dimming and control. Confirm compatibility as a chain — strip, driver, controller, interface — and verify at the bottom of the dimming range rather than at full output, because that is where flicker, dropout and audible buzz appear. Our control scope is strip-level: single-colour dimmers, infrared RGB controllers, a Bluetooth pixel controller. DALI, DMX and 0–10 V gear comes from the controls package.
  4. Addressable runs. Pixel work needs data planning alongside power: signal direction, injection points, controller channel capacity. Cross-reference Addressable LED Strip before fixing zone sizes.

Procurement Notes for B2B Buyers and Contractors

  1. Ask for datasheets, and read what is absent. A datasheet should state watts per metre, LEDs per metre, PCB width, voltage, colour temperature, CRI, IP rating and maximum run length. A missing figure is missing for a reason. We do not issue photometric IES or LDT files, so if your designer’s calculation needs them, plan for that rather than discovering it at modelling stage.
  2. Sample the exact model. The specific model code, colour temperature and density, in the profile and diffuser actually being used. A strip judged bare on a desk tells you almost nothing about how it reads in a 40 mm cove behind opal.
  3. Put batch arrangement in writing. Reel-to-reel tone steps are visible where two runs meet in one sightline and invisible where they do not. Specify which runs must come from one batch rather than asking for a tolerance figure we do not publish.
  4. One bill of materials, with a named supplier per line. Strip, driver, connectors, profile and control gear on a single list. This is the seam where variation orders originate, and profile is the item most often left unassigned.
  5. Hold maintenance stock from the project batch. Two to three per cent of strip plus spare drivers, stored with model code and reel identification, so a repair in year three matches rather than approximates.
  6. Check packaging and labelling before shipment. On international projects this is a customs and site-QC issue as much as a quality one — cartons that cannot be matched to a zone cause delay on site.

Can LED strip lighting be recessed into ceilings and profiles?

Yes, and it should be wherever the run is permanent. Recessed LED strip lighting sits in an aluminium profile or plaster-in channel with a matching diffuser, which improves thermal performance and therefore service life. Profiles and channels come from your profile supplier or joinery package, not from us.

Which LED strip lighting works best for ambient, indirect or backlighting?

For LED strip lights for ambient lighting and LED strip lights for indirect lighting, medium-to-high-density SMD 2835 at 24 V in a diffused profile is the standard specification. For backlighting behind a panel, go to 240 LEDs/m or COB — the diffuser sits close to the emitters and dot pattern is what you are fighting.

How do I choose between 12 V and 24 V for a long run?

24 V for long continuous runs, 12 V for short cabinet and shelf runs. 24 V roughly doubles achievable length before visible voltage drop. On very long installations, feed from both ends or inject mid-run rather than exceeding the datasheet run length.

Can your strip be used outdoors, in bathrooms or in wet areas?

Not the SMD or COB strip — all of it is IP20 and dry indoor only. Wet and exterior positions require LED neon flex in IP65 or IP67. If a drawing shows strip in a shower, pool surround, canopy or façade, it needs re-specifying before the order rather than compensating with profile detailing on site.

How do I judge high quality LED strip lighting on paper?

Beyond the datasheet figures, confirm three things it will not tell you: how batches will be arranged for runs seen together, how the strip behaves at the bottom of the dimming range on your controller, and who supplies the profile. Those three decide the installed result more than any headline number.
