Dimmable LED strip lights are not a product category. Almost every low-voltage strip can be dimmed — what decides whether it dims well is the chain behind it: driver, dimmer, control signal and the PWM frequency that the dimmer runs at.
That distinction matters commercially, because “is it dimmable?” is the wrong question to put on an enquiry. The right questions are how low it has to go, whether cameras will be in the room, and what the load is per dimmer. A strip that dims smoothly from 100 % to 20 % and then steps, buzzes or drops out below that has failed the specification even though every component was described as dimmable.

The last row is the one most often missed. Voltage drop that is invisible at full output becomes obvious at 10 %, because the difference between the feed end and the far end is a larger proportion of a smaller number.
How LED Strip Dimming Actually Works: PWM
Low-voltage strip is dimmed by pulse width modulation. The supply voltage stays at 12 V or 24 V and the dimmer switches it on and off hundreds or thousands of times per second. At 50 % the strip is fully on for half of each cycle and fully off for the other half. The eye integrates this and reads it as half brightness.
Two consequences follow, and both are commercially important.
- Colour stays constant while dimming. Because the LED is either fully on or fully off, it always runs at its rated current, so the colour temperature does not shift as it dims. This is a genuine advantage over reducing current, and it is why a dimmed strip cove holds its colour where a dimmed halogen goes warm. If a client expects the light to warm up as it dims, that is a different product requirement and needs stating before order.
- PWM frequency decides whether the flicker is visible. A low switching frequency can be perceptible directly, in peripheral vision, or as stroboscopic effect on moving objects. It also shows up on camera as banding, because a rolling-shutter sensor scans the frame progressively and captures different parts of the PWM cycle on different rows.
The camera point is not a detail. Any project where the lighting will be photographed or filmed — retail, hospitality, cinema, broadcast-adjacent spaces, and now practically any venue where guests film — needs the PWM frequency confirmed and tested with a phone camera at the lowest intended level. It is a five-minute test that prevents an argument after installation.
The other limit worth naming is the dimming floor. Every dimmer has a level below which the pulses become too short to fire the LEDs reliably, and behaviour there is dropout, flicker or a visible step to off. If the design calls for 1 % or 2 %, that has to be specified and verified — it is not an assumed capability of anything described as dimmable.

Enquiries for this product arrive under a lot of names, and they all describe the same thing. Dimmable LED light strips, dimmable LED strips, dimmable LED light strip, dimmable LED lights strips, LED strip lights dimmable — all standard low-voltage flexible strip on a dimmed circuit.
The one worth explaining is dimmable LED tape light. “Tape light” and “tape lights” are the normal North American terms for what Europe and Asia call strip, so a specification calling for dimmable LED tape lights and one calling for dimmable strip are asking for the same product. There is no difference in construction, voltage or dimming behaviour. Occasionally “tape” is used to imply a narrower or lower-profile board, so if the drawing has a dimension on it, quote to the dimension rather than the word.
What none of these terms tells you is the thing that actually matters: the dimming method, the minimum level and the load per dimmer. Those three items belong on every enquiry, whichever word is used for the strip.
Dimming Methods Compared
A cabinet light and a hotel floor do not need the same control architecture. The distinction that matters for procurement is where the dimming happens: on the DC side between supply and strip, or on the driver itself.

If the requirement is individual segment control rather than one brightness level for a whole run, that is addressable rather than dimmable — see Addressable LED Strip. Buyers regularly specify a dimmer when they meant pixel control, and the two are not substitutable.

Stated plainly: we supply DC-side single-colour dimmers and RGB controllers. We do not supply a dimmable driver, a 24 V supply of any rating, or any DALI, DMX, 0–10 V or TRIAC gear, and we have no tunable-white or CCT-adjustable strip in the range — a project needing colour temperature to change needs a different product family, not a dimmer.
What we do is state the strip’s load per metre and its PWM behaviour, tell you how many dimmers a layout needs and at what rating, and test the strip against the driver, dimmer or control interface you have selected — at the minimum level you intend to run, which is where incompatibility actually appears. On a project using DALI or 0–10 V that means we verify the strip on the specified driver; we do not supply the driver.
Senfey Single-Colour Dimmers and Controllers
Five single-colour dimmers, all working at either 12 V or 24 V, all IP20. The rating column is the one that decides the selection, and the load capacity in watts depends on the voltage — the same dimmer carries twice the wattage at 24 V as at 12 V.

Two things this table is meant to make unavoidable.
- The dimmer rating is a separate constraint from the power supply rating. A 6 A dimmer on a 12 V circuit tops out at 72 W no matter what the supply can deliver. Exceeding the dimmer is a different failure from exceeding the supply, and it is the more common of the two because nobody checks it.
- Derate these as well. Load a dimmer to about 80 % of its rating for continuous commercial service. A 6 A dimmer at 12 V is therefore good for roughly 58 W in practice, not 72 W.
All five are single-colour only. RGB and RGBW strip needs an RGB controller with the matching channel count, which we also supply in infrared handset form. And all five are IP20, so they belong in dry, accessible positions — the same rule as the strip and the adapters.
