- Energy. Current LED strip is substantially more efficient than fluorescent and dramatically more efficient than halogen, and it dims properly, which compounds the saving in spaces that do not need full output all day. Ask any supplier for measured figures on the exact product you are quoting rather than accepting a category claim.
- Maintenance. This is the lever facility managers undervalue. Strip inside a profile largely removes the recurring ladder-and-tube service cycle that dominates maintenance budgets in older buildings. In a multi-site portfolio, the labour line often moves more money than the energy line.
- Space value. Continuous linear light reads as a higher-quality space than a grid of discrete fixtures. In offices that supports rent; in retail it supports dwell time and basket size. It is the hardest lever to model and frequently the largest.

Full Retrofit, Partial Upgrade or Deferred Refresh?
Not every building justifies a full retrofit in the same year. Four options, in descending order of capital commitment.
- Full linear retrofit. Justified where energy cost is high, the space is customer-facing — retail floor, reception, hospitality, office — and the ceiling can be reworked. Return is fastest here because all three levers apply at once.
- Zone-based upgrade. Retrofit the highest-value zones first: storefront, reception, meeting rooms, executive floors. Back-of-house stays on existing lamps until the next cycle. This is the most common approach in practice.
- Lamp-level swap. For back-of-house or short-lease space, replace lamps in existing housings and plan a proper linear retrofit at the next fit-out.
- Deferred refresh. If the site is being sold or vacated inside two years, hold the budget for the incoming tenant’s fit-out instead.

The specification of the strip matters, but the supplier behind it matters more once you scale past one building. Score any candidate manufacturer against five criteria — and note that most of these are questions to ask, not claims to accept.
1. Direct manufacturing rather than trading
Confirm the supplier actually manufactures the strip, with its own production and quality control, rather than reselling. Trading intermediaries rarely support real project requirements such as custom reel lengths, colour temperature tolerance or a consistent batch across a phased delivery. 2. Batch consistency across reels
This is the single most common cause of a visually failed commercial retrofit. Adjacent runs from different production batches will not match, and in a long office corridor or a retail shelf line the mismatch is obvious once installed. Ask how the supplier handles binning and whether your full quantity can be produced and shipped as one batch. Ask for the data on the batch you will actually receive rather than a datasheet ideal.
3. Compliance for your destination market
Confirm which certificates are available for the exact SKU you are ordering, not the product family, and confirm they cover your destination market. Compliance gaps stall projects at building sign-off, which is the most expensive point at which to discover them. Raise this at enquiry stage so documentation is agreed before production, not requested afterwards.
4. Project support and lead time
Custom reel lengths, prewired connectors, matched controllers and power supplies, and phased deliveries against a rollout schedule are what separate a project supplier from a marketplace vendor. Test all of it with a sample order before the main purchase order. A supplier who handles a small awkward sample request well will handle a rollout well.
5. Transparent pricing and order terms

A Phased Roadmap for Commercial LED Lighting Retrofit
Commercial retrofits fail more often from sequencing than from product choice. A pragmatic order of work:
- Audit. Walk the site, list every fixture, and record run lengths, existing controls and voltage feeds. Take light readings so you have a baseline to compare against afterwards.
- Design. Convert each zone into a linear layout — cove, shelf edge, corridor, ceiling line — and confirm profile choice and where power supplies will physically sit. Power supply location is the detail most often left undecided until it becomes a problem.
- Sample. Order the target strip with its profile and power supply, and mock up one real meeting room, corridor or storefront. Judge it in the actual space, not on a bench.
- Approve. Sign off colour temperature, colour rendering, dimming behaviour at low output, and reel-to-reel colour match. Get this in writing before the main order.
- Roll out. Retrofit in zone waves so the building keeps trading. Night-shift and weekend installs are the norm in retail and hospitality.
- Commission. Set scene levels with the people who will operate them daily, and log energy consumption against the baseline from the audit.

Common Commercial Retrofit Pitfalls
- Reusing the existing dimmer. Putting new LED strip on a control device chosen for the old lighting is the fastest route to flicker or a dim range that stops well above zero. Confirm the controller and power supply as a set with the strip.
- Underestimating voltage drop. Long corridor runs lose output towards the far end. Choose voltage by run length, plan intermediate feed positions on the layout, and mark them before installation rather than discovering the problem at commissioning.
- Skipping aluminium profile. Bare strip on plasterboard runs hot, ages faster and generally falls outside warranty terms. Profile is the heat path, the mechanical fixing and the finished appearance in one component.
- Reel-to-reel colour drift. Different batches on adjacent runs read as a visible mismatch. Order visible runs as one batch and keep spare stock from the same order.
- Missing documentation. If the supplier cannot provide the test and compliance data your consulting engineer needs for the specific SKU, the retrofit may not get signed off. Establish what is available before ordering.
- No re-order continuity. Replacement reels years later may not match if the SKU has quietly changed. Choose a manufacturer with continuity, and hold spares from the original batch regardless.
