Recessed downlights and ceiling panels still do plenty of work in offices, but nearly every new fit-out specification now includes linear strip somewhere. Four reasons drive that, and none are about lumens. Continuity: a run of strip in a profile reads as one line of light, where discrete fixtures read as bright points with dark gaps — and in a cove those gaps are exactly what the eye notices. Geometry: strip follows drywall coves, curved reception desks and millwork edges that no catalogue fixture will fit. Serviceability: no moving parts, no lamp to change, and the profile is usually reachable from below without opening the ceiling. Commercial flexibility: you buy by the metre and cut to the drawing, so a late floor-plate change costs metres, not fixtures.

  1. Open-plan workstations. The constraint is glare in the field of view of someone looking at a screen, not raw brightness. Profiles with a diffuser, washing the ceiling as well as the desk, behave far better than a bare strip. If the strip is visible from a seated position it needs a diffuser — that is not optional.
  2. Meeting and conference rooms. Dimming matters more than output; these rooms swing between presentation, video call and workshop mode within an hour. Perimeter cove on a dimmer, plus a separate circuit for the wall behind the camera, covers almost every scenario.

Linear and cove are the two dominant strategies, and they are not substitutes. Most offices need both, doing different work.

Linear ceiling lighting

Linear runs are surface-mounted, suspended or recessed profiles carrying strip along the ceiling. They deliver light onto the work plane and simultaneously define the geometry of the floor plate, which is why architects specify them even where the calculation does not require it. Two decisions matter: the diffuser, which controls how bright the fitting looks from a seated position, and whether the profile also emits upward. A lit ceiling is the cheapest way to make an open-plan floor feel less oppressive.

Cove lighting

Cove lighting hides the strip behind a lip in the ceiling, wall or joinery and bounces light off the adjacent surface. Nothing is in direct view, so it produces soft ambient light with effectively no glare — the reason it dominates reception areas and meeting rooms. The catch is that a cove is only as good as the surface it lights: a bounce off textured plaster shows every ripple, and the strip position inside the cove decides whether you get an even wash or a visible bright band. How to Specify LED Strip for Commercial Office LED Lighting

Once the zones and the lighting types are fixed, the strip specification becomes the main procurement decision. These are the lines on a datasheet that actually change what the installed job looks like.

  1. Voltage. 24V is the usual choice for office work because it holds up better over long continuous runs than 12V, cutting the number of feed points and drivers across a large floor plate. Confirm the maximum single-feed run length with your supplier for your chosen density — it varies with density and copper weight, so a generic figure is not usable on a drawing. Many strips are dual-rated 12V/24V and some are 24V only, so check the SKU.
  2. Technology — SMD or COB. SMD LED strip lights give you a cost-effective platform for corridors, ceilings and anything behind a diffuser. COB emits from a continuous phosphor line rather than discrete chips, so it shows no dots at close range — what you want in a shallow cove, a reveal, or any run in direct view.
  3. Colour temperature. Around 3000K reads warm, 4000K is the workhorse for general workspace, cooler suits technical rooms. Pick one per zone and hold it; mixing CCT within a sightline is the most common visible defect in finished offices.

Cut interval is separate: for short reveals and modular profiles, a coarse cut interval forces compromises on the drawing.

Dimming and Control: Decide Before You Order

Control is where office projects most often get retrofitted at the client’s expense, because the lighting package was ordered before anyone confirmed how the building would switch it. Settle three questions at tender stage.

First, what is doing the dimming — a standalone dimmer on the circuit, or the building’s control system? If the building system is specified, the driver has to speak its protocol, and that is a driver decision, not a strip decision. Send the control specification to your supplier and get written confirmation of compatibility before ordering. Third, how many zones. Every independently dimmed zone is a driver, a channel and a commissioning line item. Designers routinely draw more zones than the client will use. Agree the zoning schedule with the tenant, not just the architect.

  5. Compliance documentation for the destination market. Confirm which certificates are available for your specific SKU and market before ordering — do not assume a family certificate covers the item you bought.
