Bar Counter RGB COB LED Strip Lighting for a Ghent Cocktail Bar

The Brief From Behind the Counter

This case documents a bar counter RGB COB LED strip lighting install at a 40-seat cocktail bar in Wrocław, Poland. The owner wanted a colour-changing wash under the counter kickplate and along the back-bar shelving, switchable at the bartender station without a phone app — staff hands are wet and nobody unlocks a phone mid-service. Approx. 24 meters of RGB and RGBW strip, four zones. The layer sits inside our broader bar LED lighting work.

One Rule, Then Four Zones Around the Bar

One rule was written before anything was quoted: dotless colour on skin tones — no LED pattern reflecting off drinkware, no green cast on faces. It is why bar counter RGB COB LED strip lighting is not the same spec as a domestic colour run.

1. Counter kickplate — 8.5 m. Under-glow seen by every guest approaching the bar. RGB COB, for no dots on the granite floor.
2. Back-bar shelves — 3 × 3.2 m. These need white and colour, so labels stay legible during “House White”. RGBW COB, not RGB.
3. Wall cove behind seating — 4.5 m. Ambient wash nobody inspects, so density mattered less than cost. SMD 5050 RGBW.
4. Bartender control point. One IR receiver at the till, so staff change scene without leaving station.

Products Used, and the Fourth-Channel Problem

840 LEDs/m keeps the counter dotless when guests lean over the bar. The 784 LEDs/m RGBW COB earned the shelves because a dedicated white chip renders labels correctly, where a mixed-RGB “white” goes pink on amber glass. The 5050 RGBW covers the cove at a fraction of COB cost — seat backs hide its 96 LEDs/m pitch. Both routes sit on our RGB and color-changing COB strips page.

The fourth channel needed a decision. A 44-key IR unit is a three-channel RGB controller; it cannot address the W chip on an RGBW strip. So the RGB channels run from the IR controller and the white channel from its own touch dimmable COB LED strip dimmer beside it. Two controls, but the bartender gains independent white level and colour, so “House White” is a dimmer position rather than a compromise inside a colour wheel. Binning across the three strip types follows CIE 13.3 and TM-30. Drivers are three 24V constant-voltage units, one per zone, sized by the bar’s electrician.

Commissioning Bar Counter RGB COB LED Strip Lighting On Site

1. Channel before strip. A 15 mm × 8 mm anodised channel with frosted diffuser was routed into the counter apron by the joiner while the top was on his bench. The diffuser, not the strip, removes the floor reflection.
2. IR needs line of sight. The receiver eye was first tucked behind the till and worked from nowhere. Moved to the shelf’s front lip, it reads from Approx. 4 m along the service run.
3. SELV throughout. The counter is metal-edged and guests touch it, so all circuits are 24V SELV low-voltage per IEC 61140.
4. Scenes on the DIY keys. Four presets saved with the head bartender on a closed afternoon — Happy Hour amber, House White, Late-Night Magenta, Close-Down Blue — so staff press one key, not sixteen.
5. Drivers in a dry cabinet. One cupboard under the till, clear of the ice well and glasswasher plume.

Measured at handover: counter-top illuminance Approx. 55 lux on Happy Hour, Approx. 210 lux on Close-Down, keeping it usable as a work surface under EN 12464-1. Voltage drop on the 8.5 m kickplate at full output: Approx. 3.8%. White channel: Approx. 3050K, with Approx. 120K between COB and SMD zones on one white scene. Channel case temperature after a 6-hour Friday service: Approx. 41 °C. Guests stand within Approx. 0.4 m of the shelf strip, so exposure was verified as Risk Group 0 under IEC 62471.

Five Notes if You’re Specifying a Similar Bar

1. Never use plain RGB where you also need clean white. Spec RGBW for any zone lighting labels or faces.
2. Check the controller’s channel count against the strip before ordering. Three-channel units do not drive a W chip; a separate white dimmer is the honest fix.
3. Get the channel into the joinery before the counter is installed. Retrofitting after the top is fixed doubles the labour.
4. Keep drivers clear of ice-well and glasswasher spray. Dedicate one dry cabinet.
5. Save the scenes on site with the staff who will use them. No training needed at handover.
