A 2.75 m Ceiling and a 500 lx Target

A 380 m² floor in a converted 1970s office shell in Utrecht: Approx. 2.75 m to the retained tile grid, one meeting room, one break-out coffee bar. A continuous indirect perimeter line at 4000K over the open desks, a warmer loop in the meeting room, a soffit glow at the coffee bar — Approx. 120 metres in total.

This office cove led strip lighting layout is sound on colour temperature and on strip choice. Where it breaks is the number in the brief: 500 lx maintained on the desk plane, from a perimeter cove.

What an Indirect Layer Can and Cannot Deliver

Indirect light pays a reflectance tax. Output goes up to the ceiling, comes back multiplied by the paint’s reflectance, then spreads across the whole room rather than onto the task. At 2.75 m a perimeter cove is worse again: short throw, so it lays a bright band along the wall and falls away toward the middle of the floor. What it produces is ambient and vertical illuminance — what stops a room reading basement-grey at 16:00, and why screens have no bright source to reflect.

The 500 lx figure in EN 12464-1 is a task-area number, and an open office genuinely is inside that standard’s scope — most strip applications are not, so it is worth citing carefully. It arrives with a uniformity requirement a wall-hugging perimeter line at this height will not hold across 380 m². Meeting it needs a task layer: desk luminaires or downlights over the desk rows, on a separate circuit.

So the honest split is two layers, two jobs. The cove owns ambient light and the absence of glare; the task layer owns the 500 lx. Sign the cove off on appearance and on uniformity along the run, not on a desk-plane figure it cannot carry alone. Nor did we survey it: nine points reading 480 to 540 lx is not a measurement we made, and a cove alone would not produce it. This is nearer IES practice on layering ambient against task than one compliance number.

Banding Is a Dimmer Problem, Not a Strip Problem

The client tried a cheap dimmer, saw banding on call recordings, and the fix was recorded as switching to our dimmable strip. That cannot be what happened. A strip is a passive load: it emits whatever waveform the dimmer sends, and every white strip we make will band on camera behind a slow PWM. Flicker lives in the driver and dimmer, so that is where the specification belongs. Choose the dimming chain first.

We publish no PWM frequency and no flicker measurement, and the frequency in our units is fixed by design rather than configurable, so “set above 2 kHz” is a promise we cannot make. Ask the driver manufacturer for a flicker figure at the level the room will actually run, because banding appears at low output, not at full.

One more count before ordering. Our dimmers are single-channel, so three zones dimming independently is three units and three receivers, not one unit with three zone buttons, and the handset has no scene memory. 30A is 720 W at 24V — that is the number to size against. Drivers are the contractor’s: our line is DC12V adapters topping out at 96 W. So is the aluminium; we hold no profile line. The best decision here was the acoustics contractor’s, and it stands: keep drivers out of a 12 m² meeting-room void, because hum is audible on a call.

The perimeter feed is the one thing worth copying exactly. A 68 m loop on a single end is not a run: percentage drop scales with the square of run length, so splitting it into halves fed from opposite corners cuts the drop roughly fourfold, not twofold. Reels cap at 20 m, so those halves are multi-section anyway and the seams belong on corner returns. Drop reads as a brightness taper with a slight warm shift, the blue pump dimming faster than the phosphor answers. Every circuit sits in the SELV band of IEC 61140, and a diffuse ceiling bounce is the mildest case IEC 62471 describes. Platform detail sits on the 24V COB LED strip page.

If You’re Retrofitting an Open Floor

  • Give the task number to a task layer. A cove owns ambient and vertical light; 500 lx on a desk belongs to desk luminaires — see our commercial office LED lighting notes.
  • Specify the dimming chain before the strip. Banding is a waveform, and no strip fixes a waveform.
  • Plan two feeds on any perimeter past Approx. 25 m. Cable before plaster is cheaper than an injection point after it.
  • Count channels, then count amps. Three independent zones is three single-channel dimmers, and 30A is 720 W at 24V.
