Project Overview
A boutique hospitality operator refurbishing a small property in Valencia asked us to spec a hotel cove lighting COB LED strip package covering its lobby, guest-floor corridors, and 22 refurbished guest rooms. The design brief called for a dotless warm-white line with a deliberate shift between public and private zones — 3000K in shared circulation, 2700K in bedrooms — and asked us to keep on-site rework to a minimum during a five-week fit-out window.
Scope at a glance: Approx. 320 meters of strip across three zones, 24V constant-voltage drivers stored above accessible ceiling panels, and a 25 mm × 18 mm aluminum channel with frosted polycarbonate diffuser recessed into a crown-shadow gap. Public-area color rendering was specified at CRI ≥ 90, comfortably above the minimum color-rendering index (Ra) that EN 12464-1 sets for hotel reception and circulation spaces. Every run was kept IP20 because the cove sits inside a dry, enclosed joinery pocket.
Three COB Strips for Three Cove Zones
Instead of standardizing one density across the property, we specified three COB SKUs — one per zone. The reason is optical, not commercial: cove depth and viewing distance change zone by zone, and matching LED density to the geometry is what keeps the light line dotless.

The Four Calls That Shaped the Corridor Run
Four issues shaped this warm-white cove line: how often to inject 24V on the corridor, how to justify IP20 on the submittal, where to slot strip mounting into the wet-trades sequence, and how to hold color consistency across three SKUs. Approx. 28 m of continuous corridor cove per guest floor risks visible dimming at the far end of a single feed.

What We Handed Over on Floor 2
On the floor-2 sample wall the client approved the 480 LEDs/m lobby profile after one adjustment: the diffuser was swapped from clear to frosted PC to eliminate a faint chip shadow at 1.5 m viewing distance. That single change was the reason we build a mock-up at all — it costs a metre of strip to discover, and a whole ceiling to fix afterwards. If You’re Planning a Similar Hotel Cove
- Don’t standardize one density across public and private zones — match LED density to cove depth and viewing distance instead.
- On any single-feed cove longer than roughly 10 m, plan a 24V injection point in advance; retrofitting an injection after ceiling closure is the expensive path.
- Order every zone’s reels from the same CRI and white-bin batch. A cove strip system that mixes bins across a corridor reads as a mismatch even at CRI 90.
- Sequence strip mounting between joinery and final wet trades. Adhesive backing only survives the site if the pocket is closed and clean.
- Sample a 2–3 m mock-up before mass install; diffuser choice (clear vs frosted PC) is easier to change on a sample than on a finished ceiling.
