Aluminum profiles (channels/extrusions) serve three critical functions: heat dissipation to extend LED lifespan, light diffusion for a smoother appearance, and physical protection for the strip. For engineering projects, always install LED strips inside aluminum profiles — this is an industry best practice.

How to Calculate Power Supply Size

Choosing the correct power supply wattage is critical. An undersized power supply will overheat and fail; an oversized one wastes money. Use this formula:

Power Supply Formula

Required PSU = Strip Wattage/m × Total Length × 1.2
Example:
Strip: SMD 2835, 120 LEDs/m, 9.6W/m
Total length: 20 meters
Calculation: 9.6W × 20m × 1.2 = 230.4W
→ Choose Meanwell HLG-240H-24 (240W, outdoor) or Meanwell LRS-350-24 (350W, indoor with room to spare)

Voltage Drop Rule

For runs over 5 meters, always use 24V DC instead of 12V. Feed power from both ends for runs over 10m to prevent brightness drop at the far end.

Thermal Management

Always install high-power strips (>14W/m) inside aluminum profiles for heat dissipation. Without proper cooling, LED lifespan can drop by 50% or more.

Safety Margin

Load your power supply to a maximum of 80% capacity (multiply by 1.2x). This extends PSU lifespan and prevents overheating in hot climates.
