An 18-Month Autopsy in Four Wet Rooms
This waterproof cob led strip bathroom spa case is a failure autopsy, because that is how the client asked for it. A small day-spa in Aarhus, Denmark had IP44 SMD 2835 tape installed across four wet-treatment rooms in a 2024 refurbishment. At 18 months the contractor called us in to open every profile and rewrite the reinstall spec.
Three things had failed and only one was the strip. The rebuild brief asked for IP67 CRI 90 waterproof COB LED strip throughout. We could not supply that, and the reason is worth more than the order.
What Killed It Was Vapor, Not Splash, and Then the Drivers
The first profile opened was the steam-shower cove: last 400 mm corroded, copper pads black, adhesive lifted. The installer had run hot-melt over the cut end and trimmed it with a knife. The nick was invisible from outside the profile and it was enough.
But a higher IP number would not have saved the other three rooms, which had no nick and failed anyway. The second IP numeral is tested with liquid water — IPX5 and IPX6 jets, IPX7 and IPX8 immersion, all under IEC 60529. None is a vapor test. Water vapor diffuses through polymer jackets, potting resin and adhesive at a rate no immersion test measures, and in a steam room it condenses inside the assembly each time the room cools. That cycle, daily for 18 months, blackened the pads.
So the reinstall was specified by jacket material, seam position, and what the assembly does as it cools — not by IP number.
The second failure was not the strip. All six drivers sat in the ceiling void above the steam shower, at roughly 42 °C ambient through every session. Two were dead by month 15 and a third flickered at full load, while the tape downstream was undamaged — left in a sauna they were not rated for. Every driver moved to the dry service cupboard next door, one feed per room through the existing conduit, measuring 24–26 °C at peak use. The low-voltage circuits sit in the SELV band of IEC 61140; the driver primaries do not, which is why the cupboard has a door.
Why the Wet Rooms Ended Up at CRI 80
Here is the part of the brief we could not fill. We make no waterproof COB strip — every COB reference in our range is IP20 — and hold no sealed product at CRI 90 in any family. IP67 CRI 90 COB is not a stock question or a lead time; it is not on our shelf, so we said so rather than quote it.
What we do make for wet rooms is extruded neon flex, and on the seam argument it is the better answer anyway: the jacket is extruded around the conductors in one pass, so there is no seam along its length. Only the two ends are joints — which is why terminations decided this job.
The trade is CRI 80 in the wet rooms, fair enough in an indirect cove with no color-critical task. The third failure was never about CRI anyway: the 2024 install used three batches, and 12 months of bin drift plus differential ageing left the steam room and lounge visibly different whites. One batch on one PO fixes that at CRI 80 as surely as at CRI 90. Where a wet room genuinely needs CRI 90, move the source to the dry side of a sealed aperture rather than buy a rating no sealed product carries. CCTs followed the 2700K and 3000K selection guidance.
A scoping note: EN 12464-1 does apply here, unlike a private bathroom, because a treatment room is the therapist’s workplace — and it pulls against the brief, since the level a guest wants lying face-up is below what the therapist needs. Hence two presets per room, and a face-up view check against IEC 62471.

No IP68 anywhere: we do not stock it and nothing here needs immersion. Every sealed reference is 12V, so segments are short and fed individually from the cupboard, which suits the driver relocation — wiring per the installation and connection guidance.
What a Spa Owner Should Write Into the Next Tender
- Specify the jacket and the seams, not the IP number alone. No IP test measures vapor ingress, which is what a steam room does.
- Ban field-applied hot-melt in wet zones. A knife nick in an end-cap does not show from outside the profile.
- Get the drivers out of the hot void. A 42 °C ambient kills a driver faster than condensation kills a strip.
- Ask whether the sealed range carries your CRI at all. If not, move the source to the dry side rather than accept an invented rating.
