This project delivered museum gallery high cri led strip lighting for a mid-sized ceramics and textile gallery in Bologna. The curator set two conditions at the first site meeting: colours had to read the same at 3 pm daylight as at 8 pm under gallery light alone, and a visitor leaning toward a showcase must never see a bright dot.
The Two Numbers the Curator Wrote on the Wall
Before we quoted a single metre, the curator fixed two measurable targets:
- CRI 90 minimum, single bin, R9 declared in writing — the collection includes red-glazed ceramics and indigo-dyed textiles, and both collapse under generic CRI 80 strips. CRI alone says nothing about red rendering, so we pulled the R9 figure for the production batch and passed it to the gallery unedited.
- Vertical illuminance on showcase glass under Approx. 200 lx — a conservation limit, not a comfort one. It follows CIE museum guidance (CIE 157), which sets exposure by material sensitivity. That is a different question from EN 12464-1, which covers the staff areas but sets no conservation limit for exhibits.
Every later decision about museum gallery high cri led strip lighting — profile depth, driver location, dimming range — served those two numbers across an Approx. 42 m loop.
Where the Strips Go in the Gallery
The museum gallery high cri led strip lighting runs across four zones, each with its own reason for that density and profile, all drawn from our high-CRI COB range:
- Perimeter wall wash — Approx. 24 m of continuous cove above framed textiles.
- Freestanding showcases — six units, each a 900 mm top strip in a 15 × 25 mm anti-glare profile.
- Plinth uplight — four ceramic plinths, each a 320 mm strip in the top rim.
- Corridor transition line — Approx. 12 m between the halls, dimmed to 40% to reset eye adaptation.

- 480 LEDs/m for the wall wash — it keeps output moderate at 3000K, so vertical illuminance on the textile wall settled at Approx. 180 lx with no overdriving. Overdriven LEDs shift colour, which is what usually ruins gallery colour fidelity.
- 528 LEDs/m inside showcases — the denser emitter is a shorter source; with the opal diffuser, no visible dot at 30° from vertical.
- 3000K outside, 3500K inside — warmer on framed textiles to sit with the wood frames, neutral inside showcases to render red glazes cleanly. Each nominal CCT came from one batch, so ΔCCT within each group held to Approx. 100 K.
- Deep-recess profile — 25 mm of recess lifts the source above the visitor’s sightline, which does more for glare than any diffuser upgrade.
The Two Coordination Calls That Saved the Install
- Showcase build moved ahead of ceiling work. The joiner needed the strip and driver mock-up in hand to route cable inside the cabinet wall — no chase, no visible cord. It inverted the programme but avoided cutting finished walnut veneer.
- Wall-wash drivers came out of the ceiling void. The curator wanted zero acoustic tick during quiet hours, so drivers moved to a service riser at the corridor end, feeding the Approx. 24 m cove as two Approx. 12 m runs from opposite ends to hold voltage drop under 3%.
Sample sign-off preceded the batch order: a 1 m section of ES-COB-480 lit beside a natural-light reference card under Approx. 3 pm north light. The curator marked the preferred 3000K bin, and that bin ID went onto the PO — the same habit that governs retail store LED lighting.
What We Handed Over at Opening Week
- Approx. 42.7 m of museum gallery high cri led strip lighting across four zones, all in anti-glare profiles.
- Showcase interiors visually dot-free from a normal stance of Approx. 400 mm off the glass.
- Vertical illuminance on textile walls measured Approx. 175–195 lx, inside the ≤ 200 lx target.

If You’re Specifying a Small-Gallery Package
- Ask for R9 in writing, not just CRI. A high-CRI strip with a weak R9 still fails red glazes. Make the supplier state the figure for your batch.
- Order one CCT bin for the whole gallery. Nominal 3000K varies by roughly ±150 K reel to reel; over an Approx. 40 m loop that reads as two different rooms.
- Separate conservation limits from comfort standards. Exhibit exposure is a CIE 157 question; workplace standards answer a different one.
- Choose profile depth before LED density. A deeper recess kills glare more reliably than a denser strip.
