The View From 200 m Across the Water
This building facade LED neon flex lighting project covers a 4-storey mixed-use building in Lyon, France, seen across the Saône from a footbridge roughly 200 m away. The client’s brief started at the wrong end — SKU choice. We reversed it. The first question was what the outline reads as from the far bank at midnight, and every product decision fell out of that answer. Approx. 172 meters of neon flex went in along cornice, window returns and parapet, sitting inside our wider architectural outdoor lighting catalogue.
Reverse-Engineering the Line From the Far Bank
Four questions were answered from the footbridge with a temporary 3 m sample bar before any SKU was ordered:
- Continuous line or chain of dots? The 8 mm PVC section was the smallest that still read as one line at 200 m. Narrower profiles disappeared into the facade.
- 3000K or 4000K against golden limestone? 3000K pushed the stone orange from distance. 4000K kept it reading as stone, so 4000K it was.
- Sharp parapet corner or wrapped? A rigid strip on the 90° corner left a visible dark node. Neon flex at a 20 mm bend radius kept the corner unbroken.
- Where does the eye land first at night? The top-floor window returns — those got 100 mm clip spacing instead of the default 150 mm.

In building facade LED neon flex lighting the outdoor grade earns its cost only where weather actually lands. The IP67 outdoor PVC line is the workhorse: cornice and parapet take driving rain and freeze-thaw through a Rhône-valley winter, and a moulded IP67 end cap is what survives it. The IP65 silicone variant on window returns is deliberate — those returns sit under the roof overhang, so a lower grade at lower cost is defensible in that zone. The RGB line runs only along the signage-facing top edge, letting the building shift to a brand colour on civic-event nights without re-lamping the whole outline. Its white mode was checked against CIE 13.3 and TM-30 so it does not clash with the 4000K static line.
Fixing the Line Without Drilling Protected Stone
The facade is protected limestone and drilling was off the table. Three decisions unlocked the install. First, clip-on aluminium channels bonded to existing mortar joints only — mortar can be re-pointed later, stone cannot, so every fixing point sat on mortar. Second, feeder cables shared an existing 20 mm lightning-protection conduit down the rear elevation, agreed with the earthing contractor on site before any cable was pulled; all circuits are 12V SELV low-voltage per IEC 61140. Third, every field-cut end was re-potted with silicone on site, then submerged 30 minutes to verify IP67 per IEC 60529. Two failed the first pot and were redone — the sign-off inspector caught both, not us. Anyone specifying outdoor LED neon flex should budget for that step rather than trusting factory seals on cut lengths.
What We Measured On Handover
- Line continuity from the far bank at 200 m: no gap over 30 mm across the full outline.
- CCT spread across the 172 m run after bin-matching: Approx. 45K (4000K ± 22K) — invisible at 5 m.
- Voltage drop end-to-end on the 34 m cornice section after mid-point injection: Approx. 5.2%.
- Case temperature on a −4 °C November night: Approx. 18 °C, no thermal risk to end-cap silicone.
- Coordination rounds with the heritage architect: 2, both on clip spacing above eye level. Nothing bonded to stone.
Four Notes if You’re Specifying a Similar Facade
- Design building facade LED neon flex lighting from the viewing distance, not the SKU sheet. Sample a 3 m bar and judge it from where the public will stand.
- On heritage or protected stone, fix clips to mortar joints only. Never drill the stone.
- Re-pot every cut end on site after live testing. Factory seals do not survive a field cut.
- Bin-match the whole facade at order stage, so a one-metre swap in year three disappears into the line.
