The Complaint That Started This Job

The villa owner called with a specific problem: the previous contractor had installed a cove strip in the living room ceiling six months earlier, and every dinner-party photo showed a visible LED dot line reflected in the polished walnut floor. The strip was decent. The install was wrong. This case documents a full villa living room COB LED strip lighting retrofit across the main living room, TV wall and dining zone of a 210 m² villa in Bordeaux, France. Approx. 42 meters replaced, no joinery re-cut. The result sits inside our broader LED strip lights for home decor range.

What the Previous Install Got Wrong, and What We Changed

Diagnosis walk-through with the owner, tape measure in hand:

  1. 60 LEDs/m SMD 2835 in a shallow cove. Dot pitch of Approx. 16 mm plus a 45 mm reveal — every diode reflected on the walnut floor at seated eye level.
  2. 4000K bin in a warm-toned room. The walls are lime plaster, the floor oiled walnut. Cool-white cove light pushed everything green.
  3. No diffuser, strip direct on the cove floor. The aluminum channel had no lens — a cost cut that showed up every night.
  4. One dimmer for the whole ground floor. The owner couldn’t dim the dining zone without pulling the TV wall down with it.

So the villa living room COB LED strip lighting spec was rebuilt around four changes:

  1. Dot pitch swapped from 60 LEDs/m to 480–528 LEDs/m COB. Continuous phosphor line, no individual diodes visible at any seated angle.
  2. Two fixed warm bins instead of one cool bin. 2700K on the main cove and TV wall, 3000K over the dining niche — both warmer than the 4000K replaced.
  3. Frosted diffuser retrofit inside the existing aluminum channel. No joinery re-cut. Same channel, add-in lens.
  4. Split into three dimmed zones. Main cove, TV wall, dining — one touch dimmer per zone.

The owner originally asked for tunable 2700K–4000K here. We talked them out of it: the complaint was that 4000K read green against oiled walnut, so a dual-channel strip would have kept the disliked colour on a dial. Two warm white COB strips in matched bins fixed it with one channel per zone.

The 528 LEDs/m 24V COB earned the main cove because the walnut floor is the visible reflector — dotless COB or nothing. The 8 mm 480 COB fits the narrow TV wall reveal without touching the plaster edge, and running it at 24V rather than 12V keeps voltage drop controlled over the 12 m run. Chromaticity was bin-matched under CIE 13.3 and TM-30, so 2700K on the TV wall and 3000K over the dining niche read as intentional, not as manufacturing drift. Drivers are 24V constant-voltage sized per zone, specified by the owner’s electrician to match the existing consumer unit.

Two Details in Villa Living Room COB LED Strip Lighting That Fixed the Reflection

  1. Frosted diffuser installed 8 mm above the strip face, not touching the LEDs. That air gap smears the source into a line — a diffuser sitting on the phosphor still shows points.
  2. Strip pushed 12 mm back from the cove lip. The lip becomes the visible edge; the LED is invisible from below waist height. Same principle a joiner uses on a shadow gap.

All circuits are 24V SELV low-voltage per IEC 61140. Photobiological safety was verified at seated eye distance to the cove under IEC 62471 — Risk Group 0.

What Changed in the Owner’s Own Photos

  • Walnut floor reflection: continuous line, not dots, at every seated angle.
  • Measured tabletop illuminance, dinner scene: Approx. 90 lux. Reading scene: Approx. 180 lux.
  • Measured colour temperature at the dining niche: Approx. 3020K; main cove Approx. 2720K.
  • Bin variation measured across all three zones: Approx. 60K, close enough that the zone boundaries are invisible.
  • Joinery re-cut: none. The retrofit touched only strip, diffuser and dimmer wiring, keeping the owner in the house throughout.

Four Notes if You’re Fixing a Similar Room

  1. If you see a dot line on a polished floor or wet countertop, the fix is dot pitch — not brightness, not colour.
  2. Keep the diffuser above the strip with an air gap. Diffusers touching the phosphor don’t diffuse.
  3. Push the strip back from the cove lip by at least 10 mm. The lip becomes the edge you see.
  4. One dimmer per zone. TV wall and dining wash are never used at the same brightness.
