Why This Restaurant Called After Their Third Repaint
The owner of a 78-seat restaurant in Cluj-Napoca, Romania had repainted the dining room three times chasing “warm atmosphere”. The paint was never the problem. A previous contractor had installed 4000K strip in the ceiling cove, and no amount of terracotta wall colour fixes cold light landing on food. This case documents the restaurant warm white LED strip lighting retrofit that followed — Approx. 74 meters across three cove zones, inside our broader restaurant LED lighting range.
The Colour Brief, and Three Coves That Came Out of It
Three rules the head chef wrote before we quoted:
- Steak has to look red, not brown. CRI 90 minimum on any cove throwing light onto a plate, with R9 confirmed from the batch report, not the datasheet headline.
- Wine has to read its own colour. 2700K over the pour tables rather than the ceiling’s 3000K, because a warmer source lets deep reds stay deep instead of going brick.
- No hotspots on the ceiling. The old strip showed a dot pattern through the pine reveal, so the new run had to be dotless from a seated angle.
One SKU of restaurant warm white LED strip lighting across a whole venue is the easy answer and the wrong one. Zone by zone:
- Main ceiling cove — 3000K COB. 46 m round the main dining room perimeter. Broad wash, neutral warm, colour-safe on food.
- Bar and pour-table cove — 2700K COB. 18 m above the wine service area, warmer than the main cove by intent, to flatter labels and glassware.
- Shelving niches — SMD 2835 at 240 LEDs/m. 10 m in three display niches holding ceramics and bottles. Nothing is plated here, so the CRI 90 rule doesn’t apply and the denser SMD is the cost-balanced choice — the objects hide the dot pattern.
The niches sit against a retail-style display wall, so the logic from our retail store LED lighting work applies: light the merchandise, not the shelf.

The 528 LEDs/m COB earns the main cove because diners look up at the pine reveal from the banquettes, where any dot pattern shows. The 8 mm 480 COB is narrower, so it drops into the tight bar cove without a re-cut. Both are warm white COB strips at CRI 90, which carries the chef’s first rule; the CRI 80 SMD stays in the niches for that reason. Binning follows CIE 13.3 and TM-30, so the two zones read as an intentional shift, not drift. Drivers are 24V constant-voltage, sized per zone by the venue’s electrician.
The Carpenter Conversation That Saved a Week
Restaurant warm white LED strip lighting fails when the woodwork and the strip aren’t discussed in one meeting. Three things were locked with the carpenter before the strip shipped:
- Cove depth raised from 55 mm to 80 mm. A shallow reveal shows the diffuser edge and the source. 80 mm hides both.
- Pine ceiling stained one shade darker. Untreated pine bounced a green tint into the diffused wash. One walnut coat removed it.
- Feeder cables dropped through the beam joint, not the reveal. That kept the cove floor clear for the aluminum channel.
All circuits run at 24V SELV low-voltage per IEC 61140. Uniformity across the dining tables was checked against EN 12464-1, and that ratio target decided where we injected 24V mid-run.
What the Owner Noticed After One Weekend
- Wine bottle photos on the restaurant’s social feed stopped needing colour correction.
- Two-top tables nearest the wine cove began getting booked first — the warmer zone became the “date corner” with no signage.
- Measured tabletop illuminance: Approx. 180 lux at full, Approx. 45 lux on the dinner scene, both inside the EN 12464-1 restaurant range.
- Measured CCT split between main and bar cove: Approx. 290K, enough to read as a deliberate zone change when seated.
- Repaints since handover: none.
Four Notes if You’re Specifying a Similar Dining Room
- Do not pick one CCT for a whole restaurant. Wine cove 2700K, main cove 3000K, kitchen pass 4000K.
- R9 matters more than the CRI number on the sticker. Ask for the batch report on any cove lighting a plate.
- Talk to the carpenter about cove depth before the strip is on site. An 80 mm reveal hides dotless COB cleanly.
- One touch dimmer per zone, not a single master. Staff need to warm the room after 20:00 without touching the bar cove.
