The One Problem Every Cinema Ambient Layer Must Solve
A cinema screen renders black at Approx. 0.05 cd/m². Any stray ambient light above that raises the perceived floor and washes the image out. This case documents a cinema ambient LED strip lighting retrofit at a 4-screen independent cinema in Coimbra, Portugal, where the owner wanted a warm aisle glow that stayed on through the film without lifting black level on screen. Approx. 118 meters of dimmable strip went into the two main auditoria. The layer sits inside our broader club LED lighting work.
The Four Optical Rules We Wrote Before Ordering
- Never in the projection cone. Every strip sits below the sight-line of the projector beam, verified by a laser check from the booth before install.
- Warm white only, 2700K. Cooler light bleeds into the projected image as a blue cast, and 2700K falls off the eye’s photopic peak fastest once the room is dark.
- Deep dimming, target Approx. 1%. Many PWM drivers stop cleanly at 5–10%, which is still too bright in a dark auditorium. We made dimming depth and PWM frequency a written requirement on the driver, then measured the result on site rather than trusting the datasheet.
- Uniformity per EN 12464-1. Aisles need enough evenness that patrons don’t trip when the film goes dark, and that uniformity ratio drove our injection spacing.

Cinema ambient LED strip lighting splits cleanly by viewing angle. The aisle line is a dimmable SMD strip at 120 LEDs/m because nobody looks directly at it — it points down at the tread, and buying dotless COB for a surface no one examines is wasted budget. The cove is different: patrons face those walls for two hours, so it gets the 480 LEDs/m COB at CRI 90 in warm white, where a dot pattern would be obvious in peripheral vision. Both zones are ordered in one 2700K bin, and chromaticity binning follows CIE 13.3 and TM-30, because mixed bins show on the wall wash even when the aisle line is off. Drivers are 24V constant-voltage, kept on the auditorium’s dimmed circuit and entirely separate from the emergency lighting supply.
Four Scenes on One Slider, and What They Measured
The house control system runs four presets, and the strip only had to behave predictably at each one:
- Doors open — 100%. Full warm white for cleaning and seating.
- Trailers — 30%. A soft aisle wash, seatback edges just readable.
- Feature — 2%. Patrons can still find a seat mid-film while screen black holds.
- House out — off. Ambient layer down entirely, emergency lighting unaffected on its own circuit.
Measured at the Feature preset, the lift on projected black was below 0.02 cd/m² at screen centre. Colour temperature drift across the whole dim range came in at Approx. 35K, from 2700K down to Approx. 2665K at 2% — imperceptible from any seat. All circuits are 24V SELV low-voltage per IEC 61140.
Coordination With the Acoustic Trade
Two adjustments to the cinema ambient LED strip lighting came out of working alongside the acoustic panel installer, and both are the kind of thing that only surfaces on site:
- The 24V feeders were re-routed clear of the sub-woofer cavity, because cable slack in a resonant void is a rattle waiting to happen at low frequencies.
- Channel fixings moved off the panel rail centres so the acoustic fabric could still be re-tensioned later without pulling the strip.
Both auditoria were commissioned overnight between screenings, so the cinema never lost a paid session to the install.
Four Notes if You’re Specifying a Cinema Retrofit
- Ask for the dimmer’s PWM frequency in writing. Low-frequency PWM shows up on phone cameras during dark scenes.
- Keep the aisle strip below sight-line from every seat, not just the front row.
- Emergency lighting stays on its own driver and its own circuit. Never share it with the ambient dimmer.
- Match every strip in the auditorium to one 2700K bin. Mixed bins show on the wall wash even when the aisle is off.
