The CRI 95 Line We Could Not Meet, and Why It Was the Wrong Number Anyway

The brief asked for CRI 95 above the cheese counter. We do not make it — every COB strip in our range is CRI 90, so retail shelf high cri led strip lighting here started with saying so on the quote, rather than letting a number nobody would measure sit in the specification.

It also would not have solved the owner’s problem. General CRI (Ra) averages eight pastel test colours and contains no saturated red. Ham, chorizo and salami live on R9, deep red — and R9 varies enormously between two strips both labelled CRI 90. That is exactly why the outgoing lamps read “correct on paper, dull on the shelf”: their Ra was fine, their R9 was not. So this specification names the R9 of the actual bin, supplied per reel and written into the handover file, with Ra as a floor rather than the answer.

Products Used, and the Density Mistake We Nearly Shipped

The perimeter wall was first drawn with ES-2835-240-10MM, which contradicts its own justification: 240 LEDs/m is the densest SMD we make, not the cheapest, so specifying it where the strip is seen only as reflected glow pays a premium nobody sees. Drivers are contractor scope: our supplies are 12V, and this store runs 24V throughout, under the 32 V ceiling set by the safety review. CCT Follows the Product Category, Not the Store

• 4000K on packaged shelving. Brand packaging is proofed under neutral light, so a warm shelf shifts every printed colour off the designer’s intent.
• 3000K on fresh cheese and charcuterie only. Warm light lifts the yellows in aged cheese and stops cured meat reading grey, which is what 4000K does to pale dairy.
• The transition is the risk. Two CCTs in one sight line read as a fault unless something breaks the line — here the counter canopy sits Approx. 1.4 m clear of the nearest gondola end, so the eye never holds both edges at once.
• One bin per CCT across every reel, bin IDs plus R9 in the handover file. Eighteen bays side by side show any mismatch at once — a colorimetry matter settled on the PO.
• Every circuit is 24V SELV per IEC 61140, and IP20 is accepted because all three reveals are dry — ratings defined in IEC 60529.

The 0.8 mm That Would Have Stopped the Whole Order

• Three bays out of 18 came off the joinery line at Approx. 24.2 mm against a drawn 25 mm reveal. A 10 mm strip needs its carrier, and the carrier is what did not fit. One metre of the actual part went out for trial fitting before the full order; the shopfitter eased three bays and the delivery fitted first time.
• Shelf interiors are where dots cannot hide. Packages sit Approx. 220 mm below the strip, a shopper’s eye around Approx. 300 mm away, resolving Approx. 0.09 mm. SMD 2835 at 120 LEDs/m has an Approx. 8.3 mm pitch — roughly 95 arcminutes, a plain row of dots. COB is not a preference here.
• Drivers grouped in one void behind the till, not per bay. A single fault takes one aisle side, and no driver hides inside joinery.
• Longest run Approx. 4.6 m per bay, single-end fed, measured drop Approx. 1.9% — no mid-injection needed.
• Maintained illuminance Approx. 620 lx at the shelf plane, Approx. 480 lx inside the fresh counter — enough to sell the product, not enough to bleach it.

Four Notes if You’re Relighting Retail Shelving

1. Ask for R9, not just Ra. In retail shelf high cri led strip lighting two strips both labelled CRI 90 can render deep red very differently.
2. Pick CCT by product category, and keep two CCTs out of one sight line.
3. Stop paying for density on surfaces seen only as reflected glow — and check the SKU matches that logic.
4. Trial-fit one metre in the real reveal before the full order. Joinery runs undersize, and the carrier jams first.
