The Brief Behind a Bilbao Concept-Store Refit
This retail display led strip high cri project covers a specialty concept store refit in Bilbao, Spain. The shopfitter asked Senfey for a package that could do two jobs from one line: neutral CRI 90 white for the fashion and accessory shelves during trading hours, and controlled color accents on the seasonal feature wall for evening events. The brand’s priority was faithful color on merchandise — leather, denim indigo and metallic hardware all had to read on-shelf the way they read in the campaign photos.
Three constraints came out of the first meeting. Merchandise fidelity was non-negotiable, so the white light had to hold CRI 90 or better at a fixed 3000K. Glass shelves sit only 180 mm above the strip, so any dotting would be obvious to a customer at the display. And the store wanted one installed line per shelf run, not two parallel systems. That drove the specification toward a High CRI COB LED strip platform with dedicated white channels.

Why RGB Alone Could Not Light the Shelves
The contractor’s first instinct was a plain RGB COB strip — one product, dim it to white by day, run color at night. We advised against it, and the reason is worth spelling out: it is the most common specification error we see in retail.
White mixed from red, green and blue emitters is not a broad-spectrum white. Its spectral power distribution is three narrow peaks with large gaps between them, so color rendering measured against the CIE test-color method lands far below CRI 90 — nowhere near what leather and indigo need. Nor can it be specified to a nominal 3000K, because there is no white emitter to bin.
The fix is a strip with real white chips alongside the color ones. RGBCW carries five channels — red, green, blue, cool white and warm white — so the white light comes from binned white emitters at CRI 90 while the color channels stay free for scene work. The trade-off is width: the five-channel PCB is 12 mm rather than 8 mm.

Where the Strips Went — Zone by Zone
Approx. 145 meters were installed across three retail zones, on one rule: zones where customers judge merchandise color get white channels; purely decorative zones do not.

One practical note on control: we do not stock a five-in-one decoder, so white and color channels were split across separate controllers rather than pretending one unit could do both. The white channels run on their own dimmer output, which is why the trading-hours preset holds a fixed blend instead of drifting. Full white-channel options sit in the tunable and fixed white range.
Two site details are worth documenting. At the 180 mm shelf height the 840 LEDs/m density reads as a continuous line through 5 mm glass — a sparser strip would have shown pixels. Moving from an 8 mm to a 12 mm PCB also meant re-routing every under-shelf groove to a 15 mm internal profile, done on the bench rather than on site. Anyone considering a four- or five-channel strip should price that routing change into the quote.

What the Store Got at Handover
Color scenes were commissioned only after the merchandising team had loaded a sample product wall, because the palette was not finalized until that walkthrough. Before handover we logged end-of-line voltage drop at full white output; on the 9 m perimeter run the drop measured Approx. 4.2% at full 24V load, inside our 5% ceiling. All zones are IP20 dry interior installations, consistent with the enclosure framework in IEC 60529, and shelf-surface illuminance was checked against the retail categories in EN 12464-1.
The retail display led strip high cri system handed over with three commissioned scenes: a fixed 3000K trading-hours preset at CRI 90 across all shelf runs, a dimmed warm scene for evening viewing, and a saturated feature-wall sequence for seasonal launches. On-shelf output reads evenly along each shelf with no visible LED spotting behind the glass, and the brand’s visual-merchandising team accepted the white-channel output as their in-store reference for campaign color.

If You’re Lighting a Similar Shop
- Never light merchandise with RGB-mixed white. If customers judge color under it, you need binned white emitters — RGBW at minimum, RGBCW if you want to set the CCT.
- Buy white channels only where they earn it. Feature walls and decorative coves can stay on plain RGB at a lower cost per meter.
- Check your groove width before choosing channels. Four- and five-channel COB runs 12 mm wide; an 8 mm channel will not take it.
- Confirm the control side early. Five-channel strip needs five outputs; if your controller cannot do that, split white and color across two units from the start.
- Commission after merchandise, not before. The product palette drives scene tuning, so do that walkthrough with the merchandising team in the room.
