This case documents architectural crown led strip lighting on the parapet of an 11-storey office building in Gothenburg — part of our architectural outdoor lighting work. The crown sits Approx. 42 m up, read from a ferry terminal Approx. 400 m across the harbour. Approx. 148 m in three zones, specified by three engineering constraints, not the elevation drawing.

Constraint 1 — What the Wind Does Up There

Clip spacing is the part of architectural crown led strip lighting copied from an indoor cove detail and then failing. The 150 mm default suits a joinery channel where nothing pulls on the strip. On an exposed west parapet the load case is uplift on a flexible member, sized under Eurocode 1 (EN 1991-1-4) by the facade engineer:

  1. Spacing halved to 100 mm across the cap, sharing uplift across twice as many anchors.
  2. Stainless clips into a continuous aluminium backing rail, not nylon into mortar joints — the rail spreads each anchor over Approx. 600 mm of stone.
  3. Every cut end potted and cross-tied — a gust catching one loose end peels a run back along its length. Ends fail first, middles almost never.

Constraint 2 — Nobody Rents Rope Access Every Year

Facilities put it plainly: swapping a driver up there means a rope team and a closed pavement for a day. So no driver sits on the parapet — all live in the 11th-floor plant room, fed through an existing rainwater-head chase, no new penetration of the envelope.

Zone voltages differ deliberately. Cap and cornice run 24V, because an Approx. 32 m section at 12V is a voltage-drop problem, not a lighting one. The finials use a 12V-only neon flex part, so they get their own supply. Every circuit is SELV per IEC 61140. Tail drop on the longest run, mid-point injected, measured Approx. 5.4% — above the 3% we hold indoors, accepted in writing because at Approx. 400 m it is invisible. On the cornice, where two zones sit side by side, under 3%.

Constraint 3 — Two Sight Lines, Two Products

We put a temporary bar on the parapet before ordering and viewed it from the terminal. Density in architectural crown led strip lighting is set by the eye’s resolution limit, one arcminute:

  1. At Approx. 400 m, one arcminute is Approx. 116 mm. A 60 LEDs/m strip has Approx. 16.7 mm pitch — finer than anything resolvable, so 480 LEDs/m on the cap buys nothing visible.
  2. At Approx. 30 m, one arcminute is Approx. 8.7 mm. Pedestrians looking up at the cornice sit inside the range where 16.7 mm pitch resolves into dots, so that zone needs COB.
  3. CCT came from the mock-up. Against sodium harbour lighting, 3000K muddied in and 3500K held separation.

Neon flex takes the finials because those curves bend in the plane of the strip’s width — a PCB strip cannot side-bend at any radius, the wrong axis rather than a tight radius, hence the outdoor LED neon flex range. Both strip zones are IP20 parts brought to IP67 by sleeve and pot, our waterproof COB LED strip practice. The 24V outdoor drivers are not ours: sized against Approx. 850 W, where our 2A/6A inline dimmer is undersized tenfold. One 3500K bin across every reel — a colorimetry matter, settled on the PO.

The Tests, Including One Spray Cannot Prove

  • Ingress, honestly split. Cut ends were immersed at Approx. 1 m for 30 minutes on the bench — the IPX7 procedure in IEC 60529. Joints re-potted on the parapet got a spray test, which verifies IPX5/IPX6, not IP67. One west-gable cap failed its first pot and passed the second; both logged.
  • Gusts at Approx. 22 m/s in commissioning week. Paint marks on the rail showed no clip movement.
  • Joint gaps of Approx. 12–18 mm across the cap — under the Approx. 116 mm resolvable from the terminal, so the line reads unbroken.
  • Neon jacket at Approx. 14 °C on a −6 °C night, drivers at roughly 70% load.
  • Sequencing: the roofer came forward two weeks so rail fixings landed under the membrane. The bin ID went into the handover file.

Four Notes if You’re Specifying a Crown

  1. Set clip spacing from the wind case, not the indoor detail. Architectural crown led strip lighting fails at fixings and end caps long before the LEDs go.
  2. Pick density from viewing distance using the arcminute limit — it turns taste into arithmetic.
  3. Keep drivers inside the envelope, and check the dimmer’s rating against connected load before quoting.
  4. Fix the rail before the membrane. Waterproofing after fixing beats fixing after waterproofing.
