This case documents park pathway led strip lighting along an Approx. 240 m curved footpath in a Tampere public park, plus an Approx. 22 m timber-deck bridge over a stormwater channel. The municipality set three rules: no fixture above the handrail, no glare into the reed beds, no cable a child can reach. Part of our architectural landscape lighting work.

The 12V Line on the Datasheet That Reorganised the Design

Our only natively IP67 outdoor neon flex is ES-NEON-SIGN-03, and it is 12V only — not a 12V/24V part. That one line decides the electrical layout of park pathway led strip lighting at this length, because 12V does not travel.

At 120 LEDs/m the run draws roughly Approx. 9 W/m. An Approx. 30 m segment is Approx. 270 W — at 12V, Approx. 22 A through strip copper. That is not a design, it is an overheated joint. Fed from both ends, a practical 12V neon run is Approx. 5 m before the tail yellows.

So Approx. 240 m at 12V is a distribution problem, not a strip problem. The path carries a 24V bus in oversized direct-burial cable, with 12V conversion in four IP67 pits, each serving Approx. 60 m via taps every Approx. 5 m. The honest cost: four sets of field electronics instead of one heated cabinet, and in a Finnish park that is the maintenance risk, not the LEDs. Accepted in writing, and every pit opens without closing the path. A 24V outdoor neon would avoid it — we do not make one.

Products Used, and How the Groove Aims the Light

The extruded PVC jacket is why this part sits outdoors at all: it diffuses, so at the Approx. 1 m a pedestrian passes there are no dots, and it is natively IP67, not sealed by us. No side-emitting variant is involved — the neon lies on its side under a clear polycarbonate slot cap, so emission is horizontal and grazes the paving. Zone B is one Approx. 22 m run off the bridge abutment, so it runs at 24V and holds 3% drop with no field conversion. The 2835 part is IP20 as supplied. A handrail underside collects driven snow that melts and sits, so IP65 — a spray rating — is not enough; it was potted and sleeved to IP67, our waterproof SMD strip method. Drivers, bus cable and pits are contractor scope: our adapters are 12V, 96 W, IP20 — wrong on all three counts for an outdoor Approx. 2.4 kW load.

What Frost Actually Breaks, and the Test We Ran First

  • The jacket fails before the LEDs. PVC stiffens as temperature drops, and the failure mode is cracking at a bend under thermal contraction, not diode death.
  • So the sample was bent, not straight. One Approx. 3 m offcut went 20 cycles between −25 °C and +5 °C in a jig holding two Approx. 60 mm bends. A straight coupon would have passed while proving nothing. No cracking, no dark segments, no colour shift.
  • The groove drains. The slot cap sits proud so snow blades ride on granite, and the groove falls to the path camber, so meltwater leaves rather than freezing on the jacket.
  • One 3000K bin across every reel, bin ID in the handover file. The municipality vetoed cool white on wildlife grounds.

Commissioning Numbers

  • Every circuit is SELV per IEC 61140. Nothing touchable on the path exceeds 24V.
  • Taps every Approx. 5 m; worst-case tail drop Approx. 2.6%. Bridge run, Approx. 2.4%.
  • Cut ends and every pit termination were immersed at Approx. 1 m for 30 minutes — the IPX7 procedure in IEC 60529. Not a hose test, which verifies IPX5/IPX6 and is no evidence of IP67.
  • Path surface at Approx. 12–18 lx — a ceiling set by the parks department to keep the reed beds dark, not a level we chose.
  • Astronomical timer only. Motion sensing was refused on privacy grounds, so the system holds no occupancy data.
  • Risk Group 0 at eye level under IEC 62471. Commissioned over two nights, no daytime closure.

Four Notes if You’re Lighting a Public Path

  1. Check the voltage of the specific part, not what the family offers. Park pathway led strip lighting becomes a distribution problem the moment the only IP67 option is 12V.
  2. Bench-cycle a bent sample before the PO. Jackets crack at bends; a straight coupon passes every time.
  3. Recess into the kerb rather than the handrail top. The groove aims the light, hides the cable, takes the snow blade.
  4. Immersion and spray prove different ratings. Ask which was run.
