One Ceiling Plan, Three Environments
A wellness floor inserted into an existing boutique hotel in Bruges: Approx. 210 m² of treatment rooms plus a shared pool room, one ceiling plan crossing three environments. A dry relaxation cove behind a plaster reveal, a mirror ledge in a shower niche, and a coping outline sitting over open water. The house signature is 3000K throughout.
Three environments, three protection levels — the brief had that structure right. What it got wrong is what an IP number promises, and the hotel spa waterproof led strip lighting package built on that promise names two things we do not make.
No IP Numeral Is a Steam Test
IPX7 is a defined procedure: temporary immersion in liquid water, to a stated depth, for a stated time. Nothing in it involves vapour. Steam works by a different mechanism — vapour permeates the polymer, then condenses inside the jacket when the room cools overnight. A jacket that passes an immersion test can still collect water inside itself across a season, and no digit in IEC 60529 measures that.
So “IP67 resists steam and casual splashes on the mirror ledge” is two claims wearing one number. The splash half is real. The steam half is untested by it.
The product named for that zone also does not exist. Every COB reference we make is IP20; there is no IP67 COB range and no silicone-injected COB sleeve. Sealed product here is LED neon flex and nothing else — four extruded references, all CRI 80. The brief was sound in declining to trust a factory-injected COB seal under chlorine vapour. There is no such seal to distrust.
Nor do we hold chemical-compatibility data for chlorine against the jacket, and the sealed reference is PVC, which hardens with daily thermal cycling where silicone stays flexible. Retain an offcut and inspect it after the first season.
The Mirror Ledge Moved Out of the Wet Zone
The mirror is the one place on this floor where colour rendering genuinely matters, because a guest looks at their own face in it — and the only zone where the sealed option is CRI 80. That was the trade the brief was about to make, and it is avoidable.
Geometry beats sealing. Set the emitter behind the mirror’s top edge — above the splash line, outside the shower enclosure, in a dry reveal that drains away from the strip. Light reaches the face as a wash off the mirror surround, and water never reaches the emitter at all. That zone becomes CRI 90 COB, bought by moving the strip rather than by wrapping it.
What has to be drawn for this to hold is the splash line and the fall of the reveal. If the joinery cannot put the channel above one and draining away from the other, the run has no business in that niche.
The pool coping is where the move is unavailable: an outline over water cannot be relocated out of the humidity. That zone keeps the extruded reference and accepts CRI 80, which costs nothing — no object is judged against a pool coping.

Zone C is 12V-only, so the single 24V floor bus cannot exist: A and B at 24V, C at 12V. At 12V that 22 m coping run is no single-end job — percentage drop scales with the square of run length, so a 12V run gives away roughly four times what a 24V run does. Reels cap at 20 m anyway, so 22 m is two sections, and the joint belongs on a coping corner.
Drop shows as a brightness taper, not the warm-to-cool shift the brief reported: as current falls, a phosphor-converted white goes slightly warmer, because the blue pump dims faster than the phosphor answers it. Every circuit sits in the SELV band of IEC 61140, which says nothing about derating a supply. We hold no photobiological reports either — a white source’s class under IEC 62471 follows its blue content, so a dimmed 3000K cove is that standard’s mildest case, not something to certify per luminaire. The brief’s best line stands: drivers dry, in a ventilated void above the corridor, never above the pool.
If You’re Lighting a Wellness Floor
- Move the emitter before you seal it. A reveal above the splash line beats an IP digit, and it buys CRI 90 back in the one place a face is lit.
- Read IPX7 as an immersion test. Condensation forming inside a jacket is a permeation problem no numeral covers.
- Let voltage set the run length. A 12V coping outline needs feeds where a 24V cove would not — see our hotel wet-area and outdoor lighting notes.
- Keep each zone on its own circuit. Mixed protection levels in one continuous run mean draining a pool to change a strip.
