The Opus (ME Dubai)–LED Strip Lighting for Hotels

Project Overview

Project Overview

This hotel LED strip lighting project transformed Zaha Hadid’s sculptural masterpiece into one of Dubai’s most photographed nighttime landmarks. Senfey delivered a complete flexible LED strip system spanning 9,800 meters across The Opus building’s signature architectural void, interior lobby coves, corridor linear systems, and luxury suite ambient lighting. The installation required LED strips capable of following complex three-dimensional curves — a challenge that conventional rigid fixtures simply cannot address. Moreover, the project demanded seamless integration between exterior weatherproof IP67 installations and interior decorative lighting, all controlled through a unified DMX512 fiber-optic network. Working closely with Omniyat Properties and the architectural team, Senfey configured every component to deliver consistent color quality and reliable performance across both towers of this iconic Business Bay hotel. Furthermore, the flexible LED strip for curved surfaces enabled the design team to maintain Zaha Hadid’s original sculptural intent without any compromise on light continuity or color rendering accuracy.

Client Requirements & Challenge

The building’s free-form geometry presented an extraordinary technical challenge — every surface curves in multiple axes simultaneously, requiring LED strips to follow complex three-dimensional paths with absolutely no visible breaks or inconsistencies. Specifically, the central void structure exposed all lighting fixtures to extreme desert conditions including 50-degree ambient temperatures, abrasive sand-laden winds, and intense UV radiation, therefore demanding IP67-rated protection as a minimum. In addition, the DMX512 control architecture needed to manage 3,600+ individually addressable zones across both towers with seamless scene transitions that appear instantaneous to observers at ground level. The electrical contractors faced tight coordination requirements between the facade installation teams and interior fit-out crews, as both systems share common power distribution and control infrastructure. Consequently, Senfey’s engineering team conducted extensive thermal simulation and accelerated life testing to validate component longevity under these combined stresses before committing to the final specification.

Senfey Solution

Senfey developed purpose-engineered flexible COB strips with a custom minimum bend radius of 50mm, mounted within precision-formed aluminum profiles that follow the building’s exact CAD geometry down to millimeter tolerances. As a result, the LED strip lighting for hotels achieves perfectly continuous illumination along every curve of the void structure without dark spots or intensity variations. IP67-rated silicone extrusion channels protect all void-facing installations from sand infiltration and moisture, while maintaining optical clarity for maximum light transmission. Furthermore, a fiber-optic DMX512 backbone network eliminates electromagnetic interference and ensures zero-latency scene transitions across all 3,600+ addressable zones simultaneously. The flexible LED strip for curved surfaces uses a proprietary PCB design with reinforced copper traces that withstand repeated flexing during installation without conductor fatigue. Senfey additionally provided on-site technical supervision throughout the 42-day installation program, ensuring every profile alignment matched the architectural intent precisely.

Project Gallery

The curved geometry of The Opus made this one of the most complex LED installations in Dubai, and we evaluated seven manufacturers before selecting Senfey. Their flexible strip solution followed our CAD profiles perfectly — no gaps, no hot spots, and no color variation across 9,800 meters of continuous installation. The DMX fiber backbone gives us instant scene control across both towers, which our events team uses nightly for signature lighting shows. Moreover, the system has operated flawlessly through two full Dubai summers with zero thermal failures, which validates the engineering approach entirely.
