Project Overview
This waterfront LED lighting project delivers 9,200 meters of continuous linear illumination along Sydney’s premier harbor entertainment precinct — one of Australia’s most visited public spaces attracting over 26 million visitors annually. The marine grade LED strip installation encompasses under-bench seating illumination, boardwalk edge lighting along the full 1.5-kilometer promenade, bridge balustrade integration, and landscape pathway definition that creates a cohesive nighttime identity for the entire Darling Harbour precinct. Senfey specifically designed this waterfront LED lighting system to withstand direct harbor splash zone exposure, salt spray corrosion, and occasional wave overtopping during king tide events — conditions that destroy conventional LED products within months. Moreover, the marine grade LED strip uses sacrificial anode protection technology borrowed from marine vessel engineering, providing long-term corrosion resistance without maintenance intervention. The system integrates seamlessly with the existing Darling Harbour precinct BMS, enabling automated astronomical dimming that adjusts output based on seasonal sunset times and ambient light levels. Consequently, the boardwalk maintains optimal illumination year-round while minimizing energy consumption during extended summer daylight hours.

Client Requirements & Challenge
Direct harbor splash zone exposure subjects every component to persistent salt spray corrosion and occasional wave overtopping during king tide events — creating one of the most aggressive environments for any waterfront LED lighting installation in an urban setting. Australian AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards impose mandatory RCD protection on all outdoor circuits, requiring specific driver compatibility and careful earthing design to prevent nuisance tripping across 9,200 meters of strip. However, the most significant constraint was that the boardwalk remains open to the public 24 hours per day, 7 days per week — therefore all installation work occurred within tight 4-hour nightly windows between 2AM and 6AM when pedestrian traffic reaches minimum levels. Furthermore, integration with the existing Darling Harbour precinct BMS required BACnet IP protocol compatibility and coordination with Place Management NSW’s operations team to ensure automated astronomical dimming functions correctly without affecting other connected building systems. The electrical contractors needed to achieve 200 meters of installation progress per night shift to meet the project timeline, therefore demanding pre-assembled module solutions rather than traditional on-site strip mounting.

Senfey Solution
Senfey supplied SAA/RCM certified IP67 marine grade LED strip in specially treated marine aluminum profiles featuring sacrificial anode protection tabs that prevent galvanic corrosion in the salt-laden harbor environment. The waterfront LED lighting installation utilized pre-assembled 2-meter strip-in-profile modules manufactured in controlled factory conditions, enabling rapid deployment during 4-hour nightly work windows without compromising installation quality. As a result, installation crews consistently achieved 200+ meters per night shift, completing the full 1.5-kilometer promenade within the contracted timeframe with zero public closures. All 240 drivers carry SAA/RCM certification with per-circuit RCD compatibility specifically tested to eliminate nuisance tripping from moisture ingress — a common failure mode in waterfront installations. BMS integration via 0-10V analog provides automated astronomical dimming that follows seasonal sunset curves, reducing energy consumption by 28% compared to fixed-schedule operation. Furthermore, every module underwent 500-hour accelerated salt-spray testing before shipment, simulating 10 years of harbor exposure to validate the sacrificial anode system performs as designed throughout the 5-year warranty period.
